I had no idea until just a few minutes ago. I follow the Dakar closely each year. Last few days I was wondering what happened to Andrew Short.

Did all the teams get bad gas, or just certain ones? 'Cuz. . . . "Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, the third time it's enemy action".

I think almost all professional level racing bodies, cars, bikes, on road, off road, etc control and supply the fuel used. Since it does not appear to have affected other teams it seems something fishy is up.

It affected others with poor running but his was the only bike that died. I believe the water clogged his fuel filter. If that was removed most likely the bike would have ran crappy but finished the stage. Sad

Probably a bit difficult to change the filter out on the course as it's likely located inside the fuel tank. No extra fuel to re-fill after the repair so park it.
