Hi all just joining up to start reading about the Tenere. Thinking hard about moving to a first gen.

Right now I own a Versys 650, and love the hell out of the bike. But the amount of miles I put on it (23,000 last year) is just too much chain maintenance for me.
Then today I lost a chain at 90+ mph on the highway.... sigh. Shaft time.

So look forward to spending some time reading up on the bike before making a decision between the S10 and an older GS.

Might post later in the proper sub to see if anyone in Vegas would be willing to swap rides for a quick run around.

I'm "ass uming" that you are sticking with the Gen I to keep the cost(s) down. IF that's the case, and this is just my opinion, I would stay away from Beemers. I don't consider them cost effective. If cost isn't a factor, consider the Gen II, and especially the ES; more refined, with Gen I issues resolved. That being said, the Gen I is still a solid/reliable bike for a minimal investment. There's plenty of guys here that have Gen I's with a s**t ton of miles; and still going strong. Good luck.

Yep you hit it in one. Trying to keep it $7000~. GS is far behind the S10 in terms of what I can get between the two. Basically 2007 or so GS or a 2013 s10. Just keeping options open. I can't foresee a situation of hopping on the S10 and not finding it to have enough power. But you never know. Ive ridden that era GS enough to know I'd be happy on one (power comfort etc not talking reliability/maintenance) that's the only reason its in the tiniest bit of contention.

I'd like to get into the Gen2, maybe wait another year would be the best. But just tired. Today got the best of me. Stupid dang chains.
Thanks for the advice.

2007 GS does not have more power than a gen 1 S10.
I have ridden that air cooled BMW and in fact I own an air cooled 2012 RT.

2nd Gen S10 will walk an air cooled BMW.
Not by much but it will.

See, that's what I THOUGHT, but haven't done a saddle-to-saddle comparison. I know it's quicker than what I had expected.

Gen1 or gen2 I don't think you can go wrong. I went with Yamaha because of the reliability. Something that the bemmers don't do so well. There are too many scary stories about them.

Good to hear from a person who's owned basically both. I'm not a 0-100mph stop light to stoplight guy on one wheel or anything. But I live in the desert where speed limits don't merit consideration 90-100mph on long hauls is normal.

Details, details! Good heavens man, you leave us hanging........
Year, color, farkles?
2013 White. Basic aftermarket load out on it Alt Riders, bash plate, madstad (not pictured), and I forget the aftermarket windscreen on it. Hes added heated grips (those will come off). Factory luggage and a new set of tires 36,000 miles... for $5000. Hes had it for sale a while at $6,000. He dropped it to move it quick after trying it on ebay I guess. Thought I lost out on it when he didn't relist it after ebay, but popped up this morning at a price I couldn't let go by. He just bought a honda vfr1200x for the new daily and doesn't have space so was motivated to move it.

Refreshing to have an internet deal that I'm 99% sure will go okay. He sounded like a real person, that knew bikes. Didn't bother me about having to send a down payment or anything to hold it for 2 days till I could borrow a trailer and head down.

Hi there!
I hope all had a great sunday, I was reading the tread and I had two questions
a.- When you say Gen1 or Gen 2, to what bike you are referring to?
b.- A set of tires in a none agresive, highway road, how many miles will you expect them to last?
I like how the bike looks in a white color.
Regards
Miguel

Generation 1 bikes were from 2012-2013 in North America (2010 the rest of the world)
Generation 2 bikes are from 2014- now. They have upgrades like an all digital dash, and cruise control. They also have a stronger clutch basket, and better cam chain tensioner. Also the option for Electronic Suspension.

Depends on the tire. There are a bunch of threads here about tire life.

Kyle, thanks!
So what you say of GEN 1 the bike I'm suppose to get will be GEN1, is a ST 2013 mecanical suspension, correct?
I understand that ther are different tires compound as well as the thread affects, do you know if the tire manufacturer will label in the tires specs for durability as they do for cars?
Regards

Not quite sure I understand. Are you asking if you should buy a gen1 or gen2? The gen 2 is the better bike. I bought gen 1 because it is cheaper.

I'm not aware of any tire makers that advertise durability on motorcycle tires. Riding style differ so much I've seen the same tire listed as getting 6,000 miles and someone else saying they get 9,000 miles.

When it comes to tires....all bets are off. SO many variables. But....on average....if you plan on a lot of dirt & sand work, stick with nobbies; those tires will be labeled 50/50, 60/40, or even 70/30. If, like me, most of your riding is going to be on pavement, look for tires labeled 90/10; 90% street work, and 10% playing off road. And that 10% will likely limit you to gravel, and hard pack. Mileage will vary greatly. Two people with the exact same tire can get several thousand miles difference; all depending on where & how they ride, and what their surface conditions are. If it were me, and you find a tire you might like, ask the members here if anybody has any experience with that tire. I'm betting that you can't find a tire that somebody here hasn't tried. As far as suspensions, non-ES bikes have mechanical adjustment. (I've always assumed that ES stood for Electronic Suspension) For ME, I chose the ES for the suspension, and heated grips. Everybody has their own priorities though.
