I might can make that... :-\

I love Big Bend, and used to host an annual ride out of Alpine a few years ago. We'd base out of Alpine so we could do the roads up around Fort Davis and the McDonald Observatory, and then spend a day or two riding down in the park and along the "River Road" - 170. I'd probably still base out of Alpine for this trip for the same reasons, but I'd love to meet up with you, Combo, and any others we can scare up for a get-together.

Anybody else interested in a group meeting up and staying in Alpine, then heading down to meet up with Combo?

Thanks, Combo!!! Great idea!!! ;D

The great state of Texas
May try to make this one Combo. I can't think of a better place to break in the ST. Hopefully we cool off by then, because I'd like to tent camp there.

Ya just never know from one year to the next what November will be like for getting out and back in to Colorado, so hard for me to commit on this. I don't do trailers, so if I can't ride there, I won't go there.

Love the Big Bend area for sure!

:)

Thats a good time of year to tent camp. 40's at night and 60's-70's by day. :) :) :)

I didn't have much luck finding tent camping on the net for that area, so if you find any please post it for others.

These days my camping consists of handing the desk clerk my American Express card... ;)

But here's what I could find just doing a quick search:

http://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/campground_reservations.htm

http://www.big.bend.national-park.com/camping.htm

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/big_bend_ranch/campsites/

Don't know if any of those are any help, but perhaps they can assist with some ideas.

No exact plans yet, and I could decide to stay up at Fort Davis if it's just me. In the past I have stayed at both the Ramada out on the west end of town and later years at the Best Western on the east end. Both on are the main drag - 67/90 - and both are normal roadside hotels, with breakfast, etc. Had fun at both, but we had large, fun groups every year we had the Big Bend Fall Rides, ;D

Just have to see how it works out. Anybody else out there interested in the "hotel" Big Bend option? ;)

Yep, I don't have my camping gear yet(and may not buy any). I am more for staying at a motel also.

Alpine sounds good. I stayed there once, and had a good time. November in Big Bend sounds good..

I've stayed at the Alpine Inn before. Reasonable and clean, IIRC.

Here's the two I've stayed at previously:

Ramada Inn of Alpine - http://www.ramada-alpinetexas.com/

Best Western Alpine Classic Inn - http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/US/TX/Alpine-hotels/BEST-WESTERN-Alpine-Classic-Inn/Hotel-Overview.do?propertyCode=44612

Here's one that handled some overflow one year, and I heard no complaints:

Oak Tree Inn - http://oaktreeinn.com/

This is the most historic and famous of the hotels in Alpine:

Holland Hotel - http://www.thehollandhoteltexas.com/

These next two are smaller, local outfits that are supposed to be nice:

Antelope Lodge - http://www.antelopelodge.com/

The Maverick Inn - http://themaverickinn.com/

And I know others who have stayed here, but I've not really heard anything about it, but it looks nice enough:

Hampton Inn Alpine - http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=ALETXHX

I can put up some Fort Davis spots, too, if anyone is interested, and as this thread evolves I will try to post some other highlights of the area, as well as good riding routes.

For those interested in camping on this Big Bend trip, I just received this from a friend of mine whom I have asked to go. He is a truly experienced and extensive long distance rider originally from South Africa, and he has camped all over the world on his trips. He will most likely be bringing his KLR, and he has ridden out in Big Bend a lot. I only mention his background so you know his advice is credible and probably good...

"If camping in or around BB, I would suggest Stillwell's Store just outside the entrance to BB at Persimmon gap - about 6 miles down 2627 towards Black Gap Wildlife Management area. It is a real piece of old-time rural Texas Ranching history there - far from crowds and public. $5 per person and that includes a shower. And you don't have the issue with javelina's raiding and destroying your camping gear when you are not looking in the Park. It is remote, no eateries unless you are in Marathon some 35 miles N, or in the Park in the Chisos Mts - about 35 miles to the Lodge. Alpine is another 31 miles from Marathon. An early morning ride down 2627 at sunrise is spectacular.

If a lot of riding in the observatory area - Alpine is a good center. Never camped there.

There is a group from the 'Valley' putting together another ride in the BB area in either the second to last or last WE of October too."

Just FYI...

To hopefully help some of you perhaps planning on this trip I thought I might start throwing up some posts with info about accommodations, restaurants, etc. in and around the Big Bend area. By no means will these posts have all the relevant spots in the area listed. I am only going to provide the ones I know or have heard about. Hopefully they might help some fellow riders.

To start, with post I am going to list some other places to stay in the Texas Big Bend area and some of the surrounding towns, etc. I've already listed the spots I know in Alpine, so here are some in Fort Davis:

Davis Mountains Inn - http://web.mac.com/davismtninn/Davis_Mountains_Inn/Welcome_page.html

Fort Davis Motor Inn & RV Campground - http://www.texbesthotels.com/fort_davis.htm

Harvard Hotel & Lodge - http://www.harvardhotelandlodge.com/

Hotel Limpia - http://www.hotellimpia.com/

Old Texas Inn - No web site, but it's at 113 North State Street, right across the street from the Hotel Limpia. Phone is 432-426-3118

Stone Village Tourist Camp - http://www.stonevillagetouristcamp.com/

The Veranda - http://www.theveranda.com/

Wildflower Cottages - http://www.wildflowercottages.net/

Butterfield Inn Cottages - http://www.butterfieldinn.com/

Davis Mountain Lodge & Expeditions - http://www.dmectexas.org/

Indian Lodge at Davis Mountains State Park - http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/indian_lodge/

Overland Trail Campground & Cabins - http://www.texascamping.com/

Historic Prude Ranch - http://www.prude-ranch.com/

Just FYI...

Some other info I wanted to contribute was some on motorcycle shops and repair spots in the Big Bend area. You always hope you won't need any service or parts help on an extended trip, but it never hurts to have some places lined out should the need arise...

First, for you folks that will be down in Terlingua and in the Big Bend Park area:

CycleTek
Gate 5 - 8 miles north of the Hwy 118 and Hwy 170 intersection in Terlingua on Hwy 118
Terlingua, TX 79852
Phone # 1: 432-371-2560
Phone # 2: 432-371-2569
http://www.cycletek.net/
http://www.mechanicadvisor.com/tx/terlingua/cycletek.aspx

Cycletek is owned by a gentleman named Ralph Delmar, and is genuinely renowned mechanic from racing circles who decided to move out to Big Bend and throttle back his life. He is known to really go the extra mile to help out motorcycle riders anywhere in the Big Bend area, and he also works on generators and other stationary engines, not to mention he has some facilities for tent camping if you call far enough in advance. He's your best shot at saving a bad situation if you're Big Bend.

In Alpine there's not much. Just one shop I am aware of. Never been there, nor know anything about it, but here's the info:

Big Bend Cycles
2301 West Highway 90 - near the intersection of FM 1703
Alpine, TX 79830
Phone: 432-837-3267

And west of Alpine in Marfa there's not much, either. Again, just one:

Westexrides, Inc.
207 North Highland Avenue
Marfa, TX 79843
Phone: 432-729-1913

That's about it for bike shops in the Big Bend area. If you have a problem outside of Alpine I would recommend calling Mr. Delmar in Terlingua and if he can't help you where you're at then ask him who perhaps can.

Just FYI...

Great information Dallara.

I didn't know about the shop CycleTek in that area. I was by that location about 6 times two years ago and never knew. Very good to information due to our camping location.

Thanks.
