This brings up an interesting point of how far can you go on a tank if we can only get 5.6 gal. in the tank. I say this because I haven't gotten through my first tank yet. What range should I expect?

Somehow I've lost some or my data, so I only have 63 data points to tell you that my average distance before getting gas is 195 miles. The shortest is 150 miles when I was going fast and only got 37 mpg. The longest was 232 miles when I got 50.8 mpg when I was touring around on some back roads (my average is 44.4 mpg)...2012 model.

Thanks for the info also........I seem to get between 40 and 50 miles to the gallon depending on how I ride so figures pretty much in line with yours.

Re: Real tank size

This bike's efficiency is HIGHLY dependent on speed and rpm so there is no easy single answer to the original post.

I have run the same bike into reserve at less than 150 miles, and I have gone into reserve at 260 miles, which is 52 mpg in real numbers, about 55-56 displayed mpg. And then you can apply the same variables to how long you can make reserve last.

Exactly.

The original post Checkwrecks was actually just asking if the tank really holds 23l of fuel.

Actually Dallara is trying to help you, but you don't seem to listen. Please use the search function, you might be better helped because you will find a variety of responses to your question.

Agreed. Dallara is extremely knowledgable and has provided much usefull content to this forum. He can come off a bit abrasive though. Best to just let it roll off.

Re: Real tank size

SO does that mean there can be no more threads on tank size?

That seems a bit harsh.

What about say...

Windscreens
Seat mods
Oil
Man, those K60s rock
Lights
Crash bars
Resale
BMWs - for any reason
Anyone here from the mid-west?
What colour should I paint my ____?
Seat mods - I'm serious
Squeezed an extra 3 horsepower out with this mod ::012::
Where can I tap into the high beams

Blah blah

Sometimes 'search' is just not enough. A fresh thread can get a new bunch or riders chatting. Surely that's not a bad thing.

The old hands can just click on a different thread if they don't want to follow a repetitive topic.

dallara , I learn a lot from his post , this forum would be less with out him. I look forward to meeting him some time soon.... I know people who seem to disdain wisdom of any sort from any source , they live hard lives... opinions are not mandates that demand you obey they are opinions . we all have them.... dallara , you keep on being you...... ::008:: sad how a suggestion to look up the subject on the forum from dallara has become a eye poking event by a few, grow up... dallara is an American , remember free speech ....

Re: Real tank size

The original question seemed to be does the tank hold the stated capacity? Yes, it does.

A more valid question would be: Can the pump actually get all of the gas out of the tank? No, not quite.

As Checkswrecks mentioned, fuel mileage is rather variable. RPM, rider input, load and accessories all make a difference. This bike seems to be much more variable than my past FJR. I average 42 mpg, but ride fully kitted with panniers and wind deflectors, med CalSci screen, extra lights, etc all the time. Add to that, my odo/speedo is corrected by a Speed-O-Healer, so the speed is correct, but the odo is off, so I have to add in a correction factor or use the GPS mileage to calculate true mpg. I don't trust the cute gauge, but it's a handy reference when you're in reserve and needing to decide how far you have to go for gas, and want to ride more conservatively.

When I had my fuel pump out of the tank, I bent the float arm to decrease the size of the reserve. Sort of a guess at how much to bend it, but before I had over 1.5 gallons of reserve, which I felt was silly. I don't need that much warning. I now still have just over a gallon of reserve. For me, I can usually count on ~40 miles if I'm going steady speeds under 75 mph. The other day, coming home from a long trip, but in home territory where I knew the location of all the gas stations, I ran it 36 miles into reserve. I put in 5.9 gallons. I was traveling at 80 mph steady speeds, but with hills and some wind. I figure that was about as close as I wanted to go that day and I likely would not have made it to the next station 11 miles down the road. The miles on that tank are meaningless to the rest of you, so don't ask. ;D I ride with a 4.8 gallon fuel cell, so can go over 400 miles on a full fuel load before hitting reserve. I've gone 360 to reserve, but also 450 to reserve, just different riding conditions and speeds.

Re: Real tank size

I get 185 to 200miles on bike before reserve light flashes ,dependent on how froggy I have been riding...usually 4.2gallons to top off tank on average....I like high mpg's.... the reserve light is flashing now. should go fill bike up this evening...so for me it seems that when light starts flashing I have almost 2 gallons of fuel left , but I don't like walking so I've not really pushed the limits yet... need a spare fuel bottle handy to try that...and in America in most places there is a gas station on every corner it seems...and to me if your going to ride those places where gas stops are more spread out then an extra fuel supply would be the thing to do than worry if I can get every last drop of fuel sucked out of tank...

Re: Real tank size

I got 251 miles ona single tank. Now I did run out of gas and luckly coasted dead engine into a gas station. Lucky me. When I filled the tank it only took 5.5 gallons. So plan on 5.5 gallons of fuel. I usually hit reserve around 200 miles. Hope that helps.

Re: Real tank size

Weight/Density of the gas has a lot to do with how much you're able to fit in to the tank as well. Here in Hawaii, I am putting in 5.2-5.5 gallons of fuel after 20 miles with my reserve light being on, and 220 miles or so on the tank. Most I've put in has been 6.6 gallons after 275 miles of riding. I can fit more in because our fuel is not as dense as elsewhere.

Bet you can't find that sort of info in search. ::015::

Re: Real tank size

I have put exactly 23liters in my tank. It must follow that the 4 litres on reserve do exist. I know from experience that my reserve, if I am not gunning the machine, runs for 85kms.

It's warm in the Yukon. Where are you guys ???? I'm actually considering a mesh jacket .... oh, stop ... it's not that funny. Last summer was a cooker.

Reserve will get you 60 km minimum, likely more if you're careful. R

This is valid input. I know some may find it difficult to believe, but fuel density makes a difference. To the point where, when it counts, people measure fuel density of the gas before testing for volume. I ran the Iron Butt Rally last year and fuel cells were tested for volume using pump gas from a local station... but not before the fuel density was tested, and various calculations performed so that regardless of where you were from, the volume measurement was uniform. One poor bastid had to put about 6 lbs of chain in his fuel cell, because the volume was greater than he stated. Not the ideal method, but it worked.

So one person's 23 liters is not another person's 23 liters, sometimes. ::025:: Clear as mud.
