My son David recently got one of the last Harmonizers available before the manufacturer, Grok on the adv forum, passed away. Today I made this video to send him to show him how to use it to check and adjust the throttle body sync on his 2014 ES. The same principle applies regardless of the instrument you use to do the TBS. I hope that this might help others that are interested in this simple task, which is part of regular maintenance.

I used to be able to embed a video by deleting the "s" in the URL, but that doesn't seem to work now. You'll just have to click on the link.

Thanks, Guys, glad that you found it helpful. BTW, the wrench I used to loosen the tank pivot bolt is of course a 12 mm, not a 10. Also, when I first went to start the bike for the check, you might notice a bit of a "hard start", but that was only because I had the tank vertical while I didn't have much fuel in it, so had to lower it a bit so the fuel pump could pick up some fuel.

Fred - to embed here at the ST forum, just put the embed code with no http in front of it - like this

www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgcnOD7K_9k&feature=youtu.be

Another Tutorial here (no vid like yours, tho!) that shows you how to put "pigtails" on those vacuum ports so that subsequent TBS checks do not require the lifting of the tank.

Thanks for that tip, trikepilot.

As for pigtails, I think it was the general consensus since that was first posted that it was best not to have them, as it had an effect on the vacuum circuit and the resultant readings of the TBS.

Interesting. I had not heard that anywhere else yet. I put pigtails on mine a long time ago and have never had any problems. Just out of curiosity, I went and slapped my Grok Harmonizer on the pigtails as a pre-TAT check and the TB's were perfectly in sync. I wonder of the problem had something to do with vacuum leaks at the connections. I was especially careful to get the right tubing and connectors so that there was an airtight and solid connection everywhere.

I bought a carb tune about a month ago, after a few suggested the 'lumpy' running was due to a TBS requirement, so finally did it yesterday after Fred posted the YouTube video (excellent btw ::008:: ) did everything, was giddy with excitement with the knowledge that the bike will run super smooth afterwards, well..... f*** my dog! Nothing!! Completely in sync. So now I have to live with the fact that the engine runs like s**t and that's just the way Yamaha built it. (Yes, I have installed the new '14 basket too).

I believe you are right in that one or more forum members had some problems that were traced to vacuum leaks on the additional tubing and connections. After that, it was the consensus that it might not be worth it to add the pigtails. Sounds like you did a good job of making sure that you don't have those problems. Since I can lift the tank in 5 minutes or less, then be able to see everything, including those adjusting screws very clearly so I can adjust them and also take the opportunity to empty the oil drain reservoir from the air box (forgot to mention that in the video), that method works for me.

I want to make those pig tails to connect my home made harmonizer but I have difficulties finding a place that sells 5/16 hose barb connectors and T-s. Ideally I would like to find brass fittings.
Anybody know which retailer sells such small fittings? I found one online but shipping is more than the entire order.
Thanks.

Pep Boys, Advance Auto, and other car parts stores have the barbs in hang-tag packs with barbs of a number of sizes. You end up spending $4-5 for a couple of 25 cent plastic barbs, but that's retail these days.

goto hardware store and you can find 4mm plastic irrigation T fittings to suit.
I just knock off the sharp edge of the barb so I can pull on and off without ripping the inside of the hose to shreds.

Just a quick question regarding balancing the throttle bodies, what benefit does it do to the bike backing out the factory set adjusting screw a little then balancing the other cylinder to that setting?

I suppose it allows the rhs throttle body to dampen the harshness of the pulses due the slight increase in volume.
After all It is a sealed volume once the cap is on the nipple so it acts like a air tank
