I opted for these instead of panniers: http://www.stormind.net/store.html (scroll down to crash bar bags)

Nice, I didn't realize he had a store. I have a PM in to him over on ADV so hopefully he has some in stock or cant run around quick because the week I have in July is coming up fast!

That's pretty close to exactly what I want. Something for casual storage of items that is easy to get to to compliment the Wolfman tank bag I got for my camera.

How does the bag on the radiator side work out? Does it get warm? Does the bike get warmer?

I wouldn't imagine it being an issue as the Altrider crash bars sit a fair distance away from the bodywork and these would lay atop them. There should be plenty of space for airflow.

Mine are on the way! May even make it in time for next week.

Too bad my next week trip to bump around the Arizona mountains may have been cancelled in favor of another work trip to NYC :-/

Resurrecting a thread. The Arizona trip never happened. While I just scraped by with no having to scrap it at the last minute I decided on a week camping in the Sequoia National Forest camping in different backcountry dispersed sites every night. In five days of camping I only saw another soul one night. I keep saying I'll do a ride report on it but keep failing to do so.

Anyway that's not why I'm here ;). I just thought I'd report back on this thread and showcase the Storm Industries tank panniers that I picked up. I purchased them from the website at http://www.stormind.net/store.html The bags are made to order and I was a little apprehensive about whether they would arrive on time but Brady got me hooked up just in time for my trip.

The panniers attach to the Altrider crash bars with four Velcro straps. In the week of riding I never had them come loose. Pictured here is the LH bag in place.

I used this as my go bag for commonly needed items - Maps, compass, and my Surefire headlight.

They filled the bag nicely with room left over for additional items, if needed.

The right hand bag attaches much like the left.

Keeping the strap tight leaves adequate room for airflow off the radiator. I was riding through temperatures up to 105º while getting to the mountains with no issues with the bike (me on the other hand, I was hot as hell!).

This side carried my oh crap tools. Micro Start jump box, tire plug kit, compressor, some tools, and tow strap.

This load out filled the bag up a bit more than the left hand bag but you could still fit some additional items in, if needed. Note this is the hot side of the bike. While I didn't notice any objectionable heating to the bag I wouldn't use this side to carry my candy bars.

I do not regret this purchase, I'm sure I will get a lot of use out of them.
