Suspension setting for passenger?

I have a 2013 model that I purchased a month ago and all suspension was set at the 5 (middle ) marks and the service man stated it should be a good position for anything I was going to do. I'd like to take myself (230 lbs) and my wife (140 lbs) for a ride. Does his statement hold true or should I adjust the suspension and to what position? Thanks Brad

The rear shock spring is fairly weak, just put it up on the center stand and crank it all the way up, assuming you will end up at 300+Lbs.
With that said it actually is fairly decent suspension over all.

I find the front is good for all conditions solo or pillion so when i take the wife out what i do is turn the rear shock up to high ( on the centre stand ) ..go over a few bumps then adjust it down to soft a bit at a time till the rear rides over the bumps the same as the front ...job done ..

If your bike is a standard not an ES, the stock spring is not even strong/stiff enough for just you. I weigh 220 dripping wet and I couldn't get the proper sag/preload on the stock spring with myself in riding gear and my panniers with minimal stuff in them. It was dialed down (Stiff) all the way and it still had too much sag. I won't go into the details of proper suspension setting as we've got lots of threads on that…

But I would imagine with a passenger and yourself, there is no way you are getting even close to the proper sag…

Simple, add a Penske shock with proper valving and a 1000# spring.

If you're planning on riding two up with any luggage at all, the stock shock is woefully inadequate.

YMMV

I adjust it to the last bar on the hardest setting. Me (195), wife (120), saddle bags loaded, and tail bag loaded is close to 400 lbs total. At this setting it is a little bouncy but it works for us. Longest ride was 1100 miles in 3 days and didn't have any issues. If it's just me and the wife w/o luggage i set it to the next to last bar on the hard side.

My 2012 has my rear fully cranked for load I am 300+ and when I travel load another 60 to 80 lbs.
To be honest this is one of the better stock shock's for holding it's own I have had on a bike.
When I am riding unloaded I will drop it a little to get the harshness out of it.

As stated the stock spring is a bit weak.

I am about 80KG and wound an extra couple of lines of pre-load for solo riding, with the Mrs on the back (70kg) it was still too soft on the max setting for pre-load - I would just go right here for two-up and then add damping a click at a time if it wallows, and stop adding if it starts to feel horrible or harsh, at some point you will find what you prefer.

This will get it about as good as the OE shock can be, you may be happy with it, I still found it a bit lacking with poor ground clearance and a choice between wallow and harshness (or a bit of both) so bought a new shock as at the time I was doing a lot of two-up and the cost was justified.

Good luck and happy twiddling ::008::
