I just ordered a rectangular pad to attach to the topbox. They had made one for another customer so they already have the template. Only $60 including shipping! My wife will be very happy.

Gents,
Been meaning to share this. Here is the ultimate pillion back rest set up onto an OEM box. Got it done by Rich out of Kingston, WA, a couple of weeks ago. OEM material from other ST seats he has done. Custom-made for "her highness'" posterior and lower back. Made so that the lid of the top box can freely open. The top part of the back rest has both firm and soft foam so that it gives but provides support. Very $$$. She highly approves, though, and can you put a $ on that?

Very nice SS! I'm thinking my War Department would like one of those as well... How much is $$$?

Can't remember for just the backrest. Something like $300. He is VERY pricey and usually you go there and spend the day until he gets it right. Her seat was done as well, at the same time. Not sure how he does mail-order stuff. You may have to contact him. He is swamped in the summer and people come from all over. He has accommodation (an apartment) or you can tent on his grounds. He can have an attitude - because business is good, but he takes great pride in his work and will do it until it is right. He talked me into getting my seat done, even though I didn't want it done. OEM was fine. Pulled out that night and hated it. Went back the next day an he rectified it. Very nice now. Here is his site:

Yeah, Rich does charge, but remember this is totally custom. I watched him bend a piece of steel to angle over the back and top and then turn it into a pad with various types of foam. The guy is an "artiste". My wife was on the pillion a dozen times so be measured and adjusted before he put the cover on. We even took it for several rides so it would be perfect. Some others may comment on the value of Rich. He has done several other ST sites, although I know that others have gone elsewhere.
However, you know the saying: "Happy wife ..." ::012::

Well, Trailbuster, sorry I didn't hear about you - and you are in-state. I know where you are now! Thanks.

I got my backrest yesterday for my OEM top box. Very nice work and very quick turnaround. I'm waiting for the Sargent seat to come before mounting the backrest to make sure it's at the right level. I'm thinking this could be the best $60 I have spent for the sake of two up harmony.

I will try to figure out how to add a picture once I get it mounted on the top box. They emailed me a picture of one mounted on a top box that they had done for another customer. You can contact them and they can send you the picture if you want it sooner.

With all respect due, Trailbuster, this isn't a commercial site, so a dedicated thread promoting any product is just not the way it should be done IMHO. I have no vested interest Rich's besides being a semi-satisfied customer, so putting up something to compare with what you offer is just that. Excuse me for not being with the "promotional program". I didn't mean to hijack a thread, but I certainly don't mean to adhere to any notion of evangelistic ravings on any product or service, at the omission of any rants or comparisons.
Last time I looked it was a free market, and if you offer better value than Rich or anyone else, then let the those forum members who buy from you herald their experiences or otherwise - and part of that experience is comparing with other products and services.

With all that said, I sympathize with the plights of a small business, wish yours well, and wish that I would have known about yours prior to being directed to "others".

Well, apologies for any "hi-jacking". Maybe in the future, if vendors want a thread devoted to their product (not sure of the forum protocol here), they should put the title of their products in the Thread title, in order to ensure that it isn't mistaken for a general discussion on those product types in general (as I obviously did).

Dan - I'm very interested in purchasing a backrest. Can you please provide me the contact/site information. I will be making the purchase immediately. My Yamaha OEM tailtrunk fell apart and my wife wants a backrest. I'm at this site or at rwr_1068@yahoo.com

I've had mine for over a year and it is still doing great after several trips with a bunch of stuff strapped to it. The wife doesn't think it is as comfortable as the Uly backrest was because it isn't as tall but the Wolfman dry bag and cooler haven't complained once!

Please remember, we can raise or lower the height of the backrest cushion upon request. The standard height of the backrest cushion, at approximately 9 1/2 inches, is similar to what you would find on an aftermarket seat that includes a passenger backrest as an option. Also, a backrest mounted to a top plate will sit higher than the backrest mounted directly to the OEM rack.

Want to extend my thanks and the thanks of my wife. She loves it - much happier with it than she was with the top-case.

Great product, looks great on bike, functions like it should.

Due to the overwhelming number of requests we've received for the ST passenger backrest we have added this item back into our line of accessories as of May 2015.
