I was just curious if anyone else has tried this.
My two Tenere's are so smooth that I just can't get enough of riding them.
Nether bike has been flashed and I just do not see any reason to have it done, For me they just could not run better.
I would say that I'm an easy rider and to me smoothness is top pryority!!!
I usually can ride all day or even travel for a week and setting my cruise control doesn't even cross my mind.
This is a free and very easy thing to try, so if you try it and don't like a smooth bike just set it back.
I have had mine like this for a lot of miles and have never seen a disadvantage in doing it. Great fuel mileage!
You can check the setting through the dash diagnostics and it is totally within spec.

Here it is.
I loosened the screws on the TPS and cranked it all the way counter clockwise.
I never even had to lift the tank to do this. Just reached in on the right side of the bike under the tank.
It takes a security torques for the top screw and I reached in with a skinny punch and tapped the side of the bottom screw and it came loose.

Hope this helps anyone that has a jerky non smooth running bike, It is definitely worth trying. Even if you think your bike runs smooth I would try it, You can always just set it back.

:D Blasphemy!! You're bike(s) can't be smooth without a flash!! :D I'll have to see what mine looks like. Maybe the tech knew about this, and set mine up already. Thanks.

So what's the theory behind why this would have an effect? Is it that the system is seeing a closed throttle for longer than it should? Then it gets the signal for an open throttle late, leading to the jerky throttle response?

This is intriguing, but it would be nice to know what's going on under the hood.

Here is the fsm procedure for gen1. Its in a hard location. I cant see a good way to get to the bottom screw with a bit, though the top one is very accessible.

Not very mechanically proficient here, but..I'm not sure(looking at the photo) about the second screw, is it the long horizontal one below? I'd like to attempt this as I have a jerky 2019 ES. I was considering an ECU flash but would opt for this if I can understand the procedure. Thanks!

I will give u a dollar to ride over and fix mine, my 2013 was bad and my 2018 is worse but it averages about 8 mpg better.

I wonder if cranking the TPS all the way to one side fools the ECU into thinking the throttle isn't closed all the way, defeating the off throttle fuel cut? I know when I replaced a TPS on a car I had there was specific resistances required both at full and closed throttle. I had to fiddle with the adjustment to get it right. I missed the first time and the CEL light came on. OBD II said TPS out of range or some such. I took another shot at adjustment and the CEL stayed off after that. Curious if the Tenere will eventually set an error code or not doing this? I suppose car systems which have tighter emissions requirements are less tolerant of this sort or thing though.

I tried this adjustment this morning. After rotating the throttle position sensor all the way counter clockwise and restarting the bike, the idle speed was 4,500 rpm...not good. I played with the TPS while the bike was running and the idle speed changed from 4,500 down to where the engine would die. Time to get it flashed.

Does op mean the off/on throttle response or something else?

I mean the off\on throttle response and everything else to do with riding the bike.
To me it is even smoother just cruising along at 60, 70 or any speed.

Steve is one of the smartest guys I know. Oh yea and he has a littel bit of motocycle experience.
Thanks Patrick but in reality I'm probably one of the non smartest guys you know. I just don't know anything about anything unless it has to do with riding. [it keeps life simple that way]
I did work at a Yamaha shop for 41 years and had access to smart guys working at Yamaha [The RTA'S] Regional Technical Advisors That could figure just about anything out.
I'm getting so old now,and forgetful I don't claim to even know anything about Yamaha's anymore. What did you say your name was?

When it comes to the 1200 Tenere Smooth is a interesting word and I’m sure it varies a lot with different folks. My opinion there is really no such thing as a smooth 1200 Tenere engine except when it’s not actually running.

Without doubt. But zero experience of flashed ECUs apparently.

I have ridden plenty of bikes with flashed ECU's just not Tenere's
I'm sure getting your bikes flashed can fix a lot of problems if done correctly, I just have the hope and theory that these bikes should run correctly without spending money on them. I would put my money on that these bikes ran perfect for the Japanese engineers that designed them before the EPA hacks got ahold of them. I just strive to find out a way to get it back to how they intended for them to run.

I've seen a lot of post from you saying similar stuff about these bikes.
You need to ride mine.

I have a 2012 and a 2017 with the TPS all the way counter clockwise and have never had any problem with the Idle.
