Suggestions for a replacement AGM battery

Hey all,

I'm looking to replace my battery with a YTZ14S. The Yuasa version runs anywhere from $150.00 to $200.00. Can anyone here recommend an aftermarket battery maker that sells a YTZ14S that might sell a cheaper (yet still reliable) battery? When I look on Amazon I see manufacturers like Power Source, Mighty Max, KMG and Shotgun; I don't have experience with any of them. I'm sure there are other brands not available on Amazon but available somewhere else. If I have to get the Yuasa I guess I'll spring for it, but a cheaper alternative is always nice. Any suggestions?

I bought a PowerSonic battery from batterystuff.com for my ST1300 10+ years and 120K miles ago. It’s still going strong. The Honda ST also uses a YTZ14S.

Despite all the names, there are only a few actual manufacturers. Watch the minor details for the molded features and specs and you'll be able to see the other brands that Yuasa (for example) builds. But the weight will also clue you to which ones are the same case with less guts. Ones with a good reputation include Yuasa (of course, it's the OEM choice), Extreme, and Odyssey.

That said, I basically just go for the best warranty, like OldRider implied.

Extreme is about the only brand that I would have the opportunity to actually pick up and handle; there's a Batteries Plus over in Fayetteville (about an hour from me) that sells that brand. I think WalMart carries the Mighty Max, but I haven't checked yet to see if they carry the YTZ14S in my local store (and I'm a little leery of a $35.00 battery). I was leaning towards the Extreme before I wrote my post, but I'm still looking for other suggestions. I'd never heard of the Bikemaster brand before, so already this thread is bearing fruit for me.

You beat my post on Batteries + Bulbs by a minute. :)) $99.00 and a 10% discount when bought online and picked up in store. 225amps and 8.4lbs.

A bit off the beaten path, but I’ve had great luck with Motobatt. They are physically a bit smaller (but include spacers) but have good CCA. I’ve had two of them one on my previous ST1300 and currently on my S10. I have always kept it on a battery tender they have lasted well into 5 to 7 years. An added plus is that they have battery terminals on all four corners as well as terminals which can be position to take multiple electric farkles.

Have you ever used one, Sierra?

Over the years I've tried Bikemaster, Motobatt and others, and have had good luck mostly, but will stay Yuasa in the long run. I mentioned this before and some tried to explain apples/oranges but an AGM Yuasa for the super tenere, about $150. An AGM for a Goldwing in Yuasa about $80.00 in a bigger battery. Some supply/demand thing here?

I have used Duracell's from Battery Plus on a couple of my other bikes. Haven't needed one for the ST yet, but when I do, I probably will stay with the Duracells.

The difference is X vs Z series batteries. The Yuasa battery for the Wing comes standard as a YTX, but is available in a GYZ version at a much higher price. Both are AGM batteries. The Z batteries are usually, but not always stronger than an X battery and will usually last longer.

Not yet; I've killed this one twice, and it starts a little slower than it used to. My neighbor, with a 'Wing, swears by them. I, personally, think that the Odyssey battery will likely last longer. But, at half the price....

Well, circumstances forced my hand this morning, as Mr. Yuasa shuffled off this mortal coil. I stopped at O'Reilly Auto to pick up some oil for an oil change, and ended up buying their house brand of YTZ14S (a Super Start Platinum). Same weight and dimensions as the Yuasa YTZ14S, same AH rating (11.2), but 210 CCA rather than the 230 CCA of the Yuasa. That's the same CCA as the OEM Yuasa YTZ12S. But it was there, and handy, and it had a 12 month warranty, so I opted to give their house brand a chance. It was $103.99.

I appreciate the responses from you all, and I'll keep the info handy in my manual for the next time around. Thanks to everyone.

Yeah, I thought it would last a little longer, but no such luck. I could have let the bike sit while I ordered one, but it's my main transportation, so convenience and availability won out in the end.

Rode my new '18 for the first time yesterday. The oem battery is pretty wimpy and I'll probably replace it with something more robust before any trips.
