Stupid Crappy OEM side case locks

Okay, this is my second time down this road. Last time it happened, I locktited and lubed everything. Somehow the blue locktite on the right side case didn't hold the lock together. So last night I tried to remove the key from the lock and the entire core came out. No matter what Dallara says, these locks are the cheapest shit I've ever encountered ::010:: I have never had a lock core come out of any other lock in 53 years of turning keys. Never. Sometimes a lock will corrode and get stiff but the core doesn't fall out rendering the thing un-useable.

I have read thru the thousands of ... wait... make that MILLIONS of posts here about how fiddly and finicky the locks are. Then some fanboy jumps in and says it must be user error. There should be NO fiddling... it's a f*cking LOCK for chrissakes. We love the bike so we defend something that's indefensible!

Going to the garage with a bourbon and a hammer to try and get into the very expensive, useless side case...

RANT OVER.

If it makes ya feel better, I think it's a fine rant. Fair and balanced, in fact.
Enjoy that bourbon before you use that hammer though. Just in case.

Somewhere on here someone posted a good method for opening the case when this happens that does not require damage/destruction of the case. I wish I could remember what it was but if you search around you'll prolly find it.

Can confirm these locks are pieces of crap. Used Loctite and the screws still manage to get loose. I've watched plenty of videos of different pannier lock systems and you don't see any of them saying "But please make sure to compress the lid before trying to unlock since our lock mechanism is a cheap, plastic POS."

I'm replacing these OEM panniers soon. I'm tired of this crap.

I hear ya man. I had one come out and I had another on the verge... Even undoing and lock-tite'ing them in, its part of my "monthy". check.... They are total crap. They are so crappy I'm afraid I'll bend or break my key in it, that i've bought a spare key that I use strictly on the boxes... so if it breaks, I still have a key for the ignition...

I think I read in a thread that you can open it by basically taking it apart from the bottom of the box... Never had to do that.... so far... (knock on wood)

I use both box's every day so over a month of use. Just checked, screws still in there place's. I loaded em up with L.T. and cranked in the scews. I guess one should leave a tool to use on them in the box. They are realy cheep tho, Yamaha coulda done a better job. Pressing the lid down to open and close before turning the lock is a Must.

I can understand all of your pain but... its a mechanical thing and does not think or make decisions but it does react. React to what?

I just installed my second set of OEM Side Cases. Do I think they are the best, NO, but they fit the niche for many of us.

My first set... I had the un-Loctite's lock come loose. Re-installed the lock with Loctite and 40,000 miles later (without checking) they were still there when I traded it in.

Two days ago I installed the locks with Blue Loctite and expect nothing different than the first set.

If the locks continue to come loose while using Loctite... contact Loctite.

If you want to discuss Yamaha Instructions... then I can kick in a couple pages of rant.

My locks are still doing fine after two years of service. Treat them gently as you would treat a lady. The pressing is necessary because the lid has a gasket to make it water resistant and the locks are not heavy duty. I know what I'm dealing with and therefore I treat them accordingly. If I want to manhandle them, then I know I have to look elsewhere.

No problems at all in about 4 years with mine. And yes the pressing is necessary as Juan has posted. Did the blue Loc when I first got them and no worries.

Thanks for the offer Mark B! You can come drink my bourbon any time! I think I read somewhere that you could stick a screwdriver in the hole left by the lock core and move the locking hook over to get within.

Hearing from all the folks who have had good luck makes me smile. I never once discussed the locks on my Givi cases on the VStrom, they worked for me every time!!! ::013:: Oh, and the door lock on my front door once needed replacement, even though I used it every day for 10 years!

Thanks for the rant. I went and checked mine and all the screws were loose. Re-installed them all with blue loc-tite. Hopefully that takes care of things.

So.
I looked into the hole on the right side case and saw nothing that would catch a screwdriver. Put my finger in and the metal part pushed into the case. Clunk.
Unscrewed 8 screws on the bottom and realized the front, left corner is held in position by the attachment bracket. There was enough room to put my hand in and take a picture. The spring gizmos are circled in yellow. The latch hook is in red. Direction I need to push is green arrow. I put a short screwdriver in and the hook won't budge.

Ideas?

This happened to me once on the left case as well, but I was able to undo the latch from the outside with a small screw driver or something I had available with me. It only took me a minute and Loctited the little bastards back in. Burbon is also my preferred drink ;D

It's been fine for the past 4 years now, but I should probably check them.

I have a crashed OEM Side Case and decided to see if I could open the Lock by moving the Hook. Done!

This is difficult for me to explain ??? If you want to get a good look at the mechanics of the latch... remove the lock from the other side case (lid open) and look inside.

Use the tool 2nd or 3rd from the left. Push the tip into the bottom of the lock hole. Work the tip down while you lightly pull back and maybe favor the right. The tip should drop next to a tab that retains a small horizontal spring. If you feel the spring you are too far too left. When the tip is in far enough... rotate it to the left while lightly pressing down on the lid to help release the lock (hook).

Pushing down on the lid is important to take the tension off the hook, otherwise it won't move. You don't want to mess up the plastic tabs that the lock rotates on as well.

My son is picking a low mileage pre owned S10 this week. It has the OEM panniers. I plan to help him locktite the screws that some seem to have a problem with. Are we talking about the 4 small torx screws shown in this pic?

Thanks.
