Steering head bearings

Does anyone know the size of the two steering head bearings? I am going to pull the forks apart for inspection and i want to have a set of bearings at hand just in case. I have done some 70k km, some of it over some pretty bad terrain. The dealer here obviously doesn't give a size but charges $85 per bearing, a bit steep i would think and there is a 4 week wait. I'm sure they are just an off the shelf bearing.
Thank you

I can't tell you the sizes, because I'm not sure what measurements they require for a tapered bearing. I do have a spare set of steering head bearings, and I can give you the identifying marking from the bearings. If you're going to a bearing shop for replacements, they may be able to cross reference their suppliers with the identifying info from Yamaha's bearings (which are Koyo and NTM bearings) to find replacements from another manufacturer.

Part Number 93332-00078, which is the upper steering head bearing and race, are both made by Koyo, and bear the following identifying info:

The bearing is marked "KOYO", "HI-CAP", "320/28JR", "JAPAN"
The bearing seal is marked "KOYO", "320/28JRR9", "17"
The race is marked "KOYO", "HI-CAP", "320/28JR", "JAPAN"

Part Number 93332-00081, which is the lower steering head bearing and race, are both made by NTN, and bear the following identifying info:

The bearing is marked "NTN", "4T-CR-0643L", "JAPAN YN"
The seal is marked "NTN", "CR-0643L"
The race is marked "NTN", "4T-CR-0643", "JAPAN", "YN"

The OP's in Australia; I imagine there are various shipping charges, duties, customs charges and VAT that he'd have to pay for bearings from Rocky Mountain that would boost his price well beyond RMATV's advertised price.

Unless you feel some notchiness, it's not likely they need to be replaced. Clean, relube, and torque according to the manual.

Thanks hollgl, so a 320/28 bearing, off the shelf. Its still feels ok but lost the top triple clamp nut on a trip in the outback and the whole front end was rattling around before i realized it, couldn't see it gone, covered by the the phone. So for a piece of mind i just want to visualize it.

Sorry, I didn't look at location. Don't they have a Rocky Outback or something??

Hi there,
My bearings needed to be replaced since they were very notchy but I am struggling to get the bottom race off.
Already destroyed the roller cage.
Any great suggestions beside buying a very expensive tool or cutting the race off with an angle grinder?

Dremel tool with a cut off wheel was what I used ….. quick and successful.

If you've already trashed the roller bearing cage then this might not work, but here's one method:

This is also how they recommend you remove the lower steering head bearing in the Super Tenere service manual.

Thanks for that, RcinRC, ordered the first tool, very clever. For the lower bearing i usually remove cage and rollers, hold the stem upside down and heat the inner ring untill it drops off.

I removed that lower race with the chisel method. Once you start to create a space from the lower clamp, it goes pretty quickly.

Hi Gerard, I was thinking of heat. What do you use? A regular heat gun?

That RockY mountain video was pretty good and showed me a couple of tricks despite having done this quite a few times on various bikes. But it did leave off the procedure and importance of aligning the forks. Also should have included the importance of torque specs.

So I got the AllBalls bearing set but I can’t tell which one is supposed to be top and bottom.
One has clearly bigger rollers and so I assume it’s the bottom. It has the number 99-3513. The other one with the smaller rollers is the number 99-3521. Anybody know for sure? Picture below.
I could probably have used the top one over but the bottom outer race had bad grooves.

Thank you. That certainly makes sense but is also disturbing, since that is the bearing with the smaller rollers, so more pressure/load on a smaller surface. I guess next time I will be getting OEM bearings (unless these last longer regardless).
