Hi again, is this tool specific for the xtz as i can only find one similar for the yamaha r1 here in the uk.
I don't know for sure if the tool I used is specific to the Super Tenere, or if it will work on other headsets. The OEM Yamaha part number for their steering head wrench is 90890-01403 (that's from the S10 service manual), I did do some quick internet research and found a tool on Amazon offered by a company called Tri Diesel that is supposed to be compatible with the Super Tenere, The tool had a compatibility chart which listed the following bikes:

Compatible with Yamaha. Steering Head Ring Nut Wrench STAINLESS STEEL RATCHET USING TWO DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES BW200, BW350T, CW50 Zuma DT250, DT1 DT2, DT3, DT50,DT100, DT125, DT175, FJ1100, FJ1200, FJ600, FZ1, FZ600, FZ600, FZ700, Z750, FZR1000, FZR400, FZR600, FZR750, FZS1000, FZS1100, FZX700, IT175, IT200, IT250, IT400 IT490L, LS2, MX100, MX125, MX175, MX250, MX360, MX400, RT100, RT2, RT3, R5, RD125, RD200, RD250, RD400, RS100, RZ350, SC500, SRX250, SRX600, SVX650, TDM850, TT225, TT350S, TT500G, TT600, TTR125, TW200, TW200, TX500, TX650, TX750, TY350, TZ125, TZ250, XC125, XJR550, XJ600, XJ650, XJ700, XJ900, XS360, XS400, XS500,XS650, XS750, XS850, XS1100,XT200, XT225, XT250, XT350, XT600, XV1000, XV1100, XV16, XV1600, XV17AS, XV700, XVS650 XVS1000, XVS1100, XVS1100, XVS650, XVS650, XVS650, XVZ1200, XVZ1300, YFZ600, YX600, YZ125L, YZ490, YZ490A, YZ490K, YZ490S, YZ80, YZ80M, YZ80N, YZ80W, YZ85, YZ85P, YZF600, LT200, LT490, XV250, VMX12, XV750, XV535, XV750XV250, CS3 Fazer, Maxim, Radian, Road Star, Route 66, Royal Star Boulevard, Virago, 1st Gen VMax, V Star, Royal Star, Venture, R1, R6, FJR, RSTD, Raider, Zuma, Seca, Super Tenere, Stryker . Tool measures about 1 3/8" x 4" x 1/4" A 3/8" standard square drive socket fits tool. drive socket and I receive a tool with standard 1/2" A 3/8" standard square drive socket fits tool 1 PCS As for the.

R1 is included in that list, so I imagine if a headset wrench is made to fit an R1, it should fit a Super Tenere.

I also found an OEM Yamaha tool offered for sale on Webike ( https://japan.webike.net/products/23237915.html ). Down in the comments section I found two comments by purchasers who said they used the tool with that part number (90890-01403) on a Yamaha R1 headset.

Well i got the tool the all balls bearings and drifted everything out and all was going fine but the original seal from the original bottom bearing will not fit on the all balls bearing and the ones sent in the kit will not fit.
The bottom seals supplied would only actually fit under the bottom bearing and would be moving every time i steer the bike? unlike the original seal that fits around the edge of the bearing so ive had to order the lower bearing from yamaha that comes with the seal attached to it.
I dont know if the all balls lower bearing supplied was not the right one but i couldn't be bothered chasing it up.
I wish i had just ordered oem to start with as the bikes now off the road and i will be having to get the bus to work in the morning....

old post revival......

So I order my bearing from Rocky MTN ATC as well, same issue races and bearings.....

How about the dust covers? I do not see the the dust covers, on the bottom it is the first part to go on the tube before the bearing

Yeah, I’ve had troubles with aftermarket head bearing seals on other bikes. Since the OEM Yamaha bearing have integral seals, I went all OEM when I replaced mine.

is there a diagram showing the order of steering head bearings, nuts etc? I read mention of a lock washer going under the top triple clamp, but mine does not have one. Curious.

I did mine today, what a pain in the arse, the bottom race pressed into the triple is a hard fit. I could not get the old one off with hammer and drift and had to grind it with a dremel until it was thin enough to give it a solid wack and it cracked and slipped off. There is not a lot of purchase to press or hammer the new bearing/race on. I suggest reusing the old race flipped over and a pipe. Be careful never to press or hammer against the rollers as you will ruin your new bearing.IMG_8908.jpeg

I found the simplest solution when I did my headset bearing replacement was to take take the steering stem to the Yamaha shop and have them remove the old lower headset bearing and put the new one on. I tried the chisel method with no success, and since I didn't have a tool to install the new bearing even if I did get it off, I figured I'd cut my losses and let them do it. I think they charged me 25 bucks to remove the old bearing and install the new one. I do most of my own maintenance, but I'm okay with the occasional compromise.
