Are you planning to ride the BDR before or after Romney? I might be interested.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone. I will start working on a ride plan once I get look at the route in a couple of weeks. I'll keep you posted.

Glad to hear you're coming back Steve.

Weather-wise and the new route being north of WV, doing the ride after Romney might have less chance of cold and wet.

I'll be there this year. Wife told me last year she wasn't going to come this year. Not because she didn't enjoy the event and company, riding in the mud with her on the back and 90/10 tires scared the **** out of her. I guess she figures I'll get out more on the dirt oriented group rides if she's not on the back. We've done a bunch of rides two up, but she's not thrilled about the offroad stuff. After buying the KTM last year, and our move to FL in June, I think I'm going to look for a street oriented tourer. Once we get settled in I think we're going to seriously look at a Gold Wing, Venture, Electra Glide (maybe), etc. Won't be a replacement for the S10, but something we can ride the gulf coast on together. It maybe the last year for me at the event unfortunately since we're moving pretty far away and the kids will be out of school earlier in the summer, which means we'll likely be heading west in the RV around this time of the year.

As always, looking forward to it!

Understand and having met her a couple of times, you have a real trooper and friend. Shopping for a new bike together would be great and glad that you mean so much to each other!

Are you trailering up from FL?

I have for the past two years following my move from PA to FL, but it's a LONG drive for a weekend. Any interest in sharing a trailer?

No I'll be heading in from Eastern MD this year, we move to FL in June. Might consider it in 2019. I have a toyhauler so it wouldn't be a problem to trailer up, but then.... it is an Adventure touring bike, and I have made the long ride to FL round trip before. Lots of good North/South routes in between if you take the long route through Alabama, GA, Western NC, TN etc.

Thanks for the reply.

I have zero desire to do the 1800 mile round trip in 2 days on a bike. :-[

Bad news: I will not be able to make it this year. I had a nice 2 week vacation planned but work came up. Romney is fun, I like everything about it, well except for the rain. Uncle Bob, John and the local crew are great people. Maybe I can still get a shirt.....Watch your beer, if Paul aint stealing mine he will be after someone else's.

If you are on the fence about going, you need to. Small town with good people, good food and for a good cause. Hope those of you can make the Oct ride in E TN......(hijack over) so we can spent some time together.

Bummer...sorry to hear it Patrrick. It was fun riding with you last year. Hope to catch up later this year.

I'm hoping to get out to do some route checking tomorrow. They are calling for nearly 70 degrees here. I could use a ride.

So what beer do you bring? I can get some for Limey to steal.

I also have a big ass cooler. Two people can sit on it. Thinking about bringing it and leave it sitting outside for communal beverage/food cooling. Sound good to the bike campers?

Weather was too lousy today to inspire me to get out and check the new Mid-Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route that passes so close to Romney.

https://ridebdr.com/MABDR

I am looking forward to checking it out. I know some of the roads close to Romney, others are new to me. Always love learning new stuff that's worth riding.

They put together a nice video about the route.

Finally made it out to Romney yesterday. First time in 2018. They are going through menus from a couple of different food vendors. That's a nice change. Normally they are searching hard for any vendor. Looks like moving the event away from competing with the Apple Blossom Festival opened up more food options.

Leaving Romney I decided to check the new Mid-Atlantic Back-Country Discovery Route (MABDR), which passes just 6 miles north of Romney in Springfield. I turned left out of the dealership and before getting to the usual turn-around spot for the demo rides, I was on the BDR.

If you've ridden the published route that takes you over the wooden bridge, you've been on the BDR. The bridge has been updated after breaking free last year.

It no longer has the left and right wheel track wood, and is just a flat surface now.

The route they picked through Green Ridge State Forest is a very easy dirt road. As long as conditions are dry, I don't think anyone would find it challenging. Just a nice pleasant ride on a dirt road.

The pavement sections were very nice on this initial section.

At Hanover, MD you have a choice to make. You can go SE to Harpers Ferry, WV or take the bypass. I stayed straight and took the bypass which repeatedly bounces between roads in PA and MD. There is a small section of dirt, but overall this is a pavement ride through farming country. Again, there is nothing challenging on the bypass. It's more a nice relaxing ride through lovely country. There is some nice riding near rivers and rocky streams.

The White Tail ski resort.

At the end of the bypass I rejoined the main MABDR and headed in the direction of Harpers Ferry. This was the first time I found a closed road. If fact all the secondary (interesting) roads through Catoctin Mountain Park were closed yesterday. Probably due t the high wind event we had last weekend that brought down a lot of trees. I would expect these roads to be open during the Camp N Ride.

I took the MABDR as far as Burkittsville, MD...the home of the Blair Witch. This second again has non-challenging dirt roads and some really nice pavement sections, and a couple of interesting bridges.

Overall, there is nothing difficult on the sections of MABDR that I rode. In dry conditions I don't think anyone would have any issues. It is a a lovely ride, through many different types of terrain. It is 95% pavement. The biggest issue I found were ridiculously slow speed limits in very remote places. Some may find they are riding at double the speed limits. Not to be racing through it, just to ride at a normal relaxed pace. I'm not advocating that. Just making you aware.

TRAINING:

Our moving the event this year to the weekend after Mothers Day meant that Alain and his crew are already booked and will not be available. Last year with the rain he only ended up with two or three students - he does this for a living and has some seriously expensive insurance! Plus, instead of charging the $300-$600/person that others wanted, part of what got people to sign up was the super pricing he gave us. Alain only charged $100/person plus asked students to make what they thought would be appropriate as a donation to the Potomac Center. We spoke to a number of training vendors to find him and nobody else would do that for us or for the kids at the http://www.potomaccenter.com. Alain's been with us for several years and we've gotten 100% positive feed-back, so this is our loss. He's a great guy to hang with in the evenings too. If you want training before Romney and can get into one of his classes, contact him at:
https://www.xplor-int.com

Question #1:
How many people are really interested in training? Feel free to post up here or PM me.

Question #2:
We have a lot of talented and experienced people who come to the Camp-n-Ride and I know we will have some experienced instructors. Before spending the energy to contact other potential off-road training vendors at this late point, do we have anybody else who is qualified and interested in instructing this year? If so, please PM me and let's talk offline. If at all possible, we want to have an experienced off-road instructor or training vendor do the training.

If nothing else and it's not a big number who are interested, I'll lead a group thru a condensed version of the MSF off-road basic class exercises. http://www.dirtbikeschool.org/Curriculum.aspx The closed range exercises start on the grass and move to gentle slopes. This'd be big bike friendly with finishing the afternoon by riding some muddy dirt roads with hopefully at least one or two mild creek crossings at whatever level you feel up to. While I've been thru the instructor course this will not be an MSF event, just sharing what is known to work on an individual level and keeping it friendly. I don't want anything out of this for me, but when done will encourage that you give something to the http://www.potomaccenter.com .
