spokes

The nipple doesn't matter, the main reason for the zip ties is to keep the broken spoke from beating the hell out of the swingarm before you get stopped.
Good point Sir! Are broken spokes common on this bike? I assumed that they just got loose and you ended up losing the nipple then the spoke. I'm hoping my relentless checking every spoke after each and every ride will prevent this. I'm actually getting sick of finding loose spokes almost every ride. After over 3000 miles you would think they would be bedded in.

I knew of this issue before ever purchasing this machine. My buddy who owns this bike warned to check spokes after each ride. He has lost more than a few on his.

Discoloured/cored spokes seem to be a common problem. However, a lot of us with this issue seem to live in U.K. where they insist on covering our roads with salt, for God’s sake! Most sensible and savvy European countries ban the use of salt as it is not environmentally friendly. I for one, don’t agree with parking my bike in the garage for a large chunk of the year and why should I? Bikes are built to be used and enjoyed whatever the weather and manufacturers should use the appropriate materials to cope with weather conditions in the markets that they sell their products.

Checked my spoke torque today. 2014 with 13500 miles. I bought it at 12k miles. all the rear spokes needed tightening. All the fronts were in spec.

How did you check and tighten the spokes? Did you check every third or fourth spoke? What is your procedure? I want to make sure I don’t untrue the wheel.

Im wondering to...or just tension the loose sounding ones only ( screwdriver method, 'ping' the spokes and tighten the dull sounding ones )

I use a torque wrench. I go around in steps of every third or fifth spoke. When I change tires I check the runout and true it to spec. If it's out of true I loosen before tighten.
