Spoke weights

Hi All -

Do spoke weights work well for the S10 rear wheel? I have noticed that the spokes on the rear wheel come in at a sharper angle to the wheel rim than the front wheel and was concerned that spoke weights might not work because of it? Or should I try that Ride-On tire sealant which is also supposed to automatically balance the tire?

Generally, spoke weights need a spoke nipple to grab to stay in place. Since the spoke nipples are on the hub side of the S10's wheel, there really is nothing for the weight to grab. Centrifugal force would keep them where they need to be while riding, but they will slide on the spokes when stopped. Really no big deal, but as tubebender suggested, stick-on rim weights are your best bet. Liquid tire sealant/balancers work fine for some, but can be really messy come tire changing time. LOL

Thanks, fellas. At the end of the day, I put the Ride-On stuff in the tire and it seemed to work as advertised. I had no wobble from the tire being out of balance and I’m HOPING that the next time I run over a nail at freeway speed I have the added benefit of not fearing for my life when the tire deflates rapidly.

Now if I could improve my tire mounting/dismounting technique so I don’t feel like I got beat up in a back alley with a lead pipe, that would be fantastic...

Some spoke weights clamp to the nipple, some to the spoke itself. The ones that clamp with a set screw to the spoke will inherently weaken the spoke and I will not use them. I use the nipple clampers on my other bikes, but sticky ones on the rim on my S10.
