Hey all,

I was chatting with tntmo over on another thread and the idea of a San Diego S10 meetup/RTE came up. I'm available most weekends (barring a work emergency). San Diego is a big area (if you include all the eastern areas). I was thinking it might be nice to do a loop up to Julian for pie or something like that. Also, totally up for meeting in a more urban setting to just hang and swap riding lies.....er..."tales"....check out bike mods and farkles, etc.

I live down in the Chula Vista (Eastlake) area.

My usual weekend loop destinations are Barrett junction or Julian for breakfast, out old HWY80 to Ocotillo Springs, sunrise HWY, lookout roadhouse off ortega highway (my brother lives in anaheim and just got a 2012 Super Tenere). Loops out to the San Bernardino mountains (Crestline, Arrowhead, Big Bear) are also on the menu when I feel like spending a whole day out.

Thoughts about locations and times?

Anyone interested?

My boys and I have talked about it. I've told them stories. We watched Norman Reedus, a couple of years ago, when he was riding out that way. The best we've been able to do together was a trip to Kerrville TX, and the "sisters". Stupid jobs....always getting in the way.

Hmmm, haven’t done any riding down that way in a while.

Be awesome to get ya down here for some pie, Jeff. Make that Hal guy come down too. Heck...we could come north a bit to Ortega for the first one...that's kind of a half way point....ish....let's see what others are up for.

Is Hell's Kitchen still open on the Ortega Highway? Been ages since I was up there.

Anyway, I'm in the Lemon Grove area. Ever ridden up Otay Mountain?

Hell's kitchen is still there! The Lookout appears to be forsale now too (although it was still operarional around new years).

Yep! Been up Otay Mountain. Last time i was on my wr250r though. Rode up there after eating at ihop off the 905 down near the border. Jeff and Hal haven't been though...

Maybe do a morning loop and end up south of dulzura on 94. Grab the buffett at barrett then, sunrise and julian for pie? We could then slab back down the 8 maybe run lyons valley rd back to the 94...

With enough notice I might be able to coordinate my travels to join ya'll. I'm in SoCal about 3 or 4 times a year. Usually riding up from the south/Sea of Cortez and cross over at Tecate or Calexico so all of the above roads are on my way.

I might have been up Otay mountain back in the 90s when I was pretty active with the was then called the HSTA (now MSTA). Seemed at the time that most of the California membership was in south Orange County and San Diego County. Chased a lot of groups around there but as a follower not sure which roads. I've done both sides of Mt. Palomar many times but It's been 10+ years.

I have been up Otay Mountain a few times over the last couple weeks. It's pretty washed out on the side from Pio Pico to Doghouse Junction. The route down from there to Marron Valley Road is in good shape. I didn't go south from Doghouse Junction, no idea how that side of it is. The rain has really taken a toll on it, not sure if I would be overly comfortable on the Tenere....I was riding my Husky TE450 the last few times but have done it all on the Yamaha before the rains.

It's pretty much dirt. Did you do a lot of dirt / gravel road riding back then, Jeff?

GTK. Maybe we need to take the little bikes out on a scouting mission. :)

I'll keep following this thread. I work a rotating shift so my weekends are every three months or so. My big ride coming up is the Jimmy Lewis school at the end of March. I will be using my Beta for that one. I plan on spooning on my Anakee Wilds on the ST in the next few months. I'm really nervous to take this beast on anything more than fire roads or 4WD roads.

I would be interested in some future rides with you guys if you don't mind riding with an almost 58 year old "C" rider. Just by looking at some of the pictures and videos I'm amazed where some of the guys are taking these huge bikes. I'm also puzzled as to why so many riders are showing how far they can push these bikes with round tires. I will not venture off the highway until I have a set of full blown "Big Block" style rubber on mine.

BTW, another good ride down your way is the Bradshaw Trail. I have always wanted to ride down there and follow it.

It would be great to meet you in person, Chris!

My brother just got a very nice 2012 from a local guy down here in SD but he lives up in Anaheim near you. He doesn't post on forums much but I've been sending him the threads so I think he's watching.

I'm in the "C-rider" category I would think. I also think you're in the appropriate "age range" for the group I'm seeing assembling here. My days of hardcore off-road ended in my teens and 20's). I use my little WR250R to do mainly fire roads and some lite two track (Think "BDR" and "CDT" stuff) mainly because it's easy to pick up. lol. That said, I find the Super Tenere a great "fire road" bike. It's surprisingly capable and forgiving on gravel roads. The otay mountain rd. is a "fire road" (although it sounds like it's a bit rutted and washed out in areas now....).

Crap, we can do all on-road stuff and meet for coffee and just chat bikes the whole time. I'm up for anything that includes motorcycles and good people. :)

PS: I've heard of the "Bradshaw trail" and may have done it on my KLR/WR in the past but I can't remember.

BTW, are you guys running any sort of helmet / bike comms? Jeff, Hal, My brother (Lee) and I just got some Cardo Smartpack (really a packtalk now that they have unlocked them with software)\packtalks\packtalk bolds. I switch from years of using Sena (tired of the the crappy software bugs). After using the Cardo's for a few rides, I can say it's a huge improvement. Especially their DMC mesh stuff.

Just curious.

Bradshaw trail is probably big bike doable, just some sandy and whooped out areas that would be annoying. CABDR is one that has my interest, I think it includes part of Bradshaw.

I have a Bilt helmet with the Bluetooth comms built in, never used it for anything except listening to music and taking a phone call now and then.
