Small oil leak - water pump tube

Noticed today that a bit of oil came out of this tube, noticed a drop on the floor as soon as i parked on the garage and a bit more on the outside / lower part of the engine guard ( i'm guessing the wind blew it and kinda sprayed it ).

I took a longer ride today, did a few quick runs to get the revs up for a change and also got the bike hotter in a bit of traffic ( which i usually don't do).

It's the 2nd time i noticed this, the 1st time was months ago.....

I know this must be the o-ring from the oil side of the water pump failing.

Anything to worry about, or just need to keep my eye on it for a while ?

Seen this many times........... Yes, keep an eye on it.. It might weep for years... If you dont like that or it gets to be more than a "weep", then just replace the whole pump.. Ive written up a long story about this in the past. Don't bother with the rebuild kit, you have to have a factory tool to properly install a seal, just buy the whole new one and slap it in.... the rebuild kit is not worth the time and frustration............ Ask me how I know this.............

For others that read this...... Oil coming out out is from the oil side...... blue / white crispy is from the coolant side.....

Thanks for the feedback ! :) I'll keep an eye on it, if it starts happening more often or becomes more abundant, i'll get it sorted, even if it means a new pump. My bike has roughly 52.200 miles.

Well, today i took the bike to work, 31 miles ride, everything was ok, it was colder in the morning....no oil dripping....on the way back, another 31 miles and about 91.4Fº air temperature ( coolant ranged from 172Fº to from 181Fº ), as soon as i park the bike in the garage...it starts dripping and kept at it for a bit. I guess the the hotter running temps make the oil thinner and easier to escape.

I already contacted my shop for them to order a new water pump, for peace of mind in the near future.

Is it ok to keep riding, or should i keep it parked until i get it sorted ? I kind of doubt this will ever generate a bike leak...but....

Ride it all you want... Should be fine until the new one shows up................ (unless it's back ordered for a year)

New water pump in today....the guys at the shop where quick about it, about 4 days to arrive, installed the same morning.... :)

+52.000 miles on the 1st one until 1st signs of o-ring leak...so it's good for a looong time now.....i recently also replaced the thermostat ( it was sticking ), temp sensor and the 4 ignition coils ( OEM ).

Peace of mind and smiles for miles....

Just a friendly FYI, you and others..... If you ever change out your coolant make sure you ONLY use what the industry calls "Asian blue coolant”. This contains no silica.... If you get or use the others that have silica it will ruin the seals in the pump and you will need to replace it again............. A friend did this exact thing...... the new one with the wrong coolant only lasted about 4-6 months before he had to install another......................

I know that in my case, they use Yamalube.

Mr Tabasco, out of curiosity, is a water pump change a straightforward job?
TIA
Yes….. replacing the whole pump is very easy. I think it’s like 3-4-5 bolts.
The rebuild (water pump) kit is a PITA……

Brand new pump in, a couple of weeks old...but i still do have a slight coat of oil showing up after a ride, like a drop that stays at the tip of the tube.

The guys at the shop said it's ok and should stop after a while, after everything bedds in. My expectation, was for nothing to show up and i'm really curious to see if it goes as they say.

Check the crankcase breather hose. If there is pressure inside the crankcase, the pump retainer would be the ideal place for the pressure (with oil) to seek to escape.

When you replaced the pump, did you take the old little hose off the bike and clean all the old oil out of the entire tube before re installing it on the new pump?

It was done at the shop, not by me. I also had the same thought ( some old residue....), but i seriously doubt that they did that....

Anyway, it seems to seep in after a ride, and i've done a few since i got it installed. Not much, but it's there.

I can still just take the skid-plate to access the tube, take it out, and clean it properly, i guess, just to be sure.

Im sure they did not clean it........... Im 99.9% sure the old oil gets hot and then drips out...... not from the new pump.... You can pull that hose, run cleaner though it, clean it all up tip-top and you should have no more leak..............

Dont'cha get tired of people doing only half the job, and that being 'good enough'............. LOL

Side note: make sure the hose clamps are tucked to the inside and not facing the out side. 'industry' & yamaha do this so there is nothing protruding out to what might damage (the pump) in this case. You dont want anything extra hanging out past the pump nipple. If they re installed them aiming out, tuck them around the side out of the way. You dont want to break that upper cast elbow off the pump.
Ive seen dealers and people do this before because it's easier to tighten and get the screw driver to the hose clamp................ but it's not correct.

Thanks for the tip, yet again ! ;-) I'll have a look 1st to see how it's on.

If it was me doing it, i'd have cleaned it, but i doubt most shops go to that length.....

I also had the feeling it could be old oil, but how much oil can there be in a hose...? Maybe enough to do this, who knows....well, i guess i'll have a go at it.

Well...it still has a bit of oil coming out after a ride and it's not old oil...nothing dramatic, but still not sealing properly and it's a new pump.

I'll have to wait and see if it is a question of the seals being new....but not what i was expecting after replacing the pump.
