Slight metal clank on rev...

I absolutely love this bike but I am OCD. Twice now when I have been down shifting to come to a stop, i'll end up in second gear, clutch in, coasting to come to a complete stop. The cars start to move, I have some speed still, i'll continue on in 2nd by reving and letting the clutch out.

Twice now, the bike didn't rev for a split second and I heard a metal clank, it's not consistent. Any ideas? I have barely 100 miles on it, 2013 just got it brand new.

And a quick question, is there suppose to be a lot of play when trying to apply the throttle? I am referring too small throttle input like when doing slow maneuvers. Like the first 1/4" or so is all just excess.

Just guessing, but I imagine the "clank" may just be the gear lash in the driveshaft making noise as the drivetrain jerks a bit from the clutch being let out, then throttle being applied at low RPM. Sure sounds like it based on your description of when it's happening.

The throttle play is adjustable in the cable, right near the grip.

Is what I am describing ill advised to do? I always preferred if I am coming to a stop because of traffic and traffic starts moving to keep it in second and rev match to keep on going smooth. The alternative being coming to a complete stop, 1st gear, and start going again.

I've been in the same situation many times, and if I'm going a tad too slow for 2nd, but not quite stopped, a blip of the throttle will aid in the downshift to 1st nicely. Or if I'm feeling too lazy to downshift, give it a little more throttle to get it going in 2nd. I don't know, I've had a couple of beers, and now you're making me over think this! :D I don't think what you're doing will hurt anything though. Maybe you're letting the clutch out a little too fast, and not adding enough throttle to make a smooth engagement? Maybe that's why you're hearing the drivetrain clank around a bit.

You may not be used to the bike's throttle by wire yet, and that, coupled with the excess play, might be causing a lot of this.

You're situation is normal. It's the shaft drive lashing and is doing no damage as you navigate around at slow speeds. Its shaft drive is shared with the vmax, so it's plenty robust. Mine does it, and I would guess almost a universal response would be there's do it to. If you really want to crank your OCD into overdrive (no pun intended), go ride slab for 30-45 minutes and feel how hot the final drive pumpkin gets ::26:: Again, you'll be fine.

The throttle is a barrel adjuster underneath the plastic sleeve. Just pull the plastic sleeve back (it'll be tough, but just keep pulling/pushing to expose the barrel adjuster)

Thanks to the both of you.

I think the fact I really really love this bike, and the fact it cost a pretty penny really cranks my OCD :)) so the slightest "what was that" has me checking.

I totally get the OCD thing, I'm the same way, especially with cars and motorcycles. Get ready for a lot of "what was thats" with this bike. It's full of clicks, clanks, whirrings, whining, rattles, and ticks. You can pretty much ignore them all, this thing is freakin bullet proof.

I used to be OCD on a lot of machines, especially street bikes. But now that I am 7 years into ADV riding again, my Tenere has so many scratches and dirt nestled up in places I can't even see, that the OCD bit has faded. I still take OCD-level care of the mechanicals, but my bike is scratched up and dirty, and it will just stay that way.

All sounds pretty normal to me.

What mode are you riding in OP? T-mode always dulls the throttle response, as will coasting as it leans out the fuelling. Best to run in S-mode IMHO, unless riding relentless slab.
