Need to buy a top case for my 2012 Yam St. Its main job will be as a backrest for my wife. I think I've ruled out OEM case due to tabs breaking off. I've also heard that giving outback trekker has plastic mounting tabs. Help , what's the sturdiest???

I have a black Givi v46 that matches the color of the 2012 Tenere I used to have both in color and style. Same smooth lines as the Tenere itself. It also has the Admore brake/running lights that are extremely bright, and, of course, a backreat. Even the Givi bracket happens to look factory for this bike. (Not always the case.) Yes, I know it's not a box that everyone thinks they need to bolt on the adventure bikes, but it actually looks good. Looking at a 2016 Black tenere again, so I am glad I kept it.

My opinion...... If you want the best made adventure style luggage, then you cannot beat Jesse Luggage. For the best bang for your buck in adventure style luggage go with Happy Trails.

Bumot... Call Jason at advmotorrad.
::026:: They've got a very nice mounting rack that will work fine as a stand alone rack.

That's the primary reason I posted about it. That rack is sturdy as hell, and you can get the Bumot mounting system and install it in any case you want. You could even make a backrest plate that attaches to the rack if you wanted to and skip the top case.

I have a Shad SH-48 with the double back rest.. I made my own aluminum plate to replace the stock luggage rack and mounted the Shad mount to the plate, and it is very sturdy. My wife would not ride with me until I got a top case. I was after comfort, and the Shad double back rest did, she now rides all the time. Great quality too. May not be as sturdy as all the aluminum cases, but this looks better and comes off and on so easily to carry into the hotel. One key twist and it is off and carries like luggage.

Or you go the I destructible "el cheapo" route that I went and bolt a B&W5500 case ($112 shipped and life long warranty) straight to the bike's carrier (about $20 for 4 longer bolts, spacers and washers).

Sorry to say, but that setup isn't going to hold up very long. The factory rack doesn't seem to be able to stand up to those kind of stresses for very long. Or where you able to go all the way through to the stronger sub frame?

You can't attach anything to the top plate of the factory rack, but I bolted the box with two long bolts all the way through the factory plate and rack to the frame of the bike, and two other bolts are bolted into the rack. There is a unused thread towards the rear of the rack, and I also replaced to front center bolt of the rack with a longer bolt and spacers so everything is very tight. The only downside it there is no quick-release. I have already been on bumpy unpaved trails with this setup and I will share here if this ever fails.

Had a Pelican mounted directly that way. Lost it once I got off pavement for a few hours.

Hey there,
The one I have is this one from GIVI Outback 58L Top case. It can hold two full size helmets, the case is big and quite suites the size of ST.
Here are some pics https://goo.gl/photos/EqsjqXFEnJeDtTAm6.
This thing is humongous - and even if that is a sturdy Aluminum rack, the fact that the mounting point on the frame is basically under the front edge of the case makes me shiver. The stress on the mounting points must be enormous.

There are 4 mounting points on the frame with M8 bolts through Ø18 and Ø22 tall spacers.
The load should not exceed 13lbs (6kg).

You can judge the mounting pattern by this instructions sheet https://www.yumpu.com/xx/document/view/49822823/sra2101-kra2101-givi

I got the 42L version of the Givi trekker outback because you can't open the lids of the oem yamaha sidecans with the bigger top box. I have had 2 other monokey top boxes(one a 52L) and no problems with the mounting system. If someone has broken the front tabs it would be nice to know.

Thanks for sharing the link. Interesting that it uses the stock base portion of the rack and just bolts through it with spacers. This is similar to how I bolted my B&W case to the rack. Well - if it's good enough for Givi, it should be good enough for me

I have the same top box and bought it for the same reasons. It's quite robust and after about 1000 miles of rough gravel/dirt roads the mont and box are showing no issues.
