Just bought a used 2012 Super T.

Can I be educated on the significance of the RED ignition key vs the black ones??
I received 1 RED ignition key and 2 black ones.

My suspicion is the RED key has some significance with a chip or other features??

Thanks all ::003::

PS Been lookin to scratch the Super T itch since they came out....very happy to get one finally. ::012:: A clean very low mile stock bike. ::008::
Had the ECU reflashed by Anthony, changed the bars to ProTaper Raptors....going to respring the forks with .85 Sonics and fresh oil/fork seals. Still winter here so haven't been able to ride it yet. ::007::

I was told when I bought mine to put the red one away in a safe place and not to lose it. It is for rekeying and in case you need a computer reset. They told me not to use it unless it is the last key you have and you need to get to the shop to get new ones cut.

Is the RED key a Canadian only thing??

Is the RED key part of an alarm system??

Not an alarm, but without the chipped keys, which the red key is a sort of master key, the bike won't start.

No it's a UK and European Yamaha thing too.. All Yams have it..

It's specifically matched to your ecu. If you lose it you must replace the ECU and the key.

Yamaha dealers will only cut you a spare key from the red.

It's also used to re-program a standard key by dealers.

Keep it safe .. DONT LOOSE IT. :(

I believe the US specs bike does not come with the immobilizer. There is a RF chip in each key, and the Red key is the master key for the RF code, and is used for reprogramming new keys. Without the RF codes, the bike will not function due to the immobilized state. This is what I understand.

That's right. The Red key is what is used to program the black keys, so if you need more black keys you have to use the Red key for the immobilizer to work.

They probably figured out that us here in the USA aren't responsible enough to look after a red key. :D
I just had that vision of the scene in War Games...... "Turn Your Key Sir.." :D

 That's stupid. I bought three spares for my 2012 spare with me one in tool box one with the wife.
Wonder if this will cause issues if you have the ECU flashed? :-\

Also be advised that the imobilizer system will only allow and recognize 2 chipped black keys , once you program a 3rd black key, it forgets the 1st key , I went through that with my FJR1300.
Imobilizer system is the dumbest idea from MoMA Yama, doesn’t prevent theft, extra expense and risky limitations.
Be very thankful your US bikes don’t have it
