Safety recall notice received - Front brake switch

I got my notice as well. I hope this goes better than previous ones. I had a car burnt to the ground during a dealer recall, and several recalls I had to pretty much undo everything they "fixed" and do the job correctly. For sure any work they do, look it over. This seems easy thankfully. I would never take in a motorcycle to get the 2nd gear recall like on the FJR1300, or brakes on my GL1800, as chances are too high of never having a motorcycle that has brakes that work or transmission that shifts correctly.

Got my recall - a 2016 non-ES. Just checked my eligibility last night and it arrived in the mail today. Definitely something incorrect in the letter indicating just 2018-2020 models.

Strange! In Russia, I will receive a revocable rear brake company! I looked at the VIN and my motorcycle was on the list

Hmmm, I already replaced the switch about 6 months ago due to the cruise control issue (yes, it fixed it), but am left wondering if the recall switch is the same as I installed or an upgraded one. I see the recall letter states that "Your authorized Yamaha dealer will replace your motorcycle's front brake switch with new one that was manufactured properly." (My italics).

I know some people have said this is any easy repair, but I think there are myriad way you could screw this up, mostly regarding the routing and placement of the clips which done incorrectly could lead to chafing of wires in the wrong places. I'm decently mechanical and this took me hours to do although admittedly I was taking my own sweet time. I think if a repair shop rushes through this or has an incompetent tech perform the recall, they could easily screw it (or something else) up. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

As far as my local dealer, I don't even trust them to change tires on my bikes, so if I do end up getting this done, I'll probably use it as an excuse to head down to the Black Hills and get it done where I bought the bike (Black Hills powersports).

My local dealer said it’s a 20 minute operation to swap the switch, apparently it involves one screw, so I think they can manage that without messing too much up.. we will see, they ordered the rep switch and will setup an appointment when the part arrives.

I think your local dealer doesn't understand that it's a switch and all wiring integrated into the switch, all in one long piece that snakes through and between the frame and down into the bundles of connectors under the RH side cover. It also involves removing some of the bodywork. So he's at least right about the one screw, up by the brake lever, but there's a lot more to it than just that.

I got my recall, with one for my kid's FJR. . . . two pieces of paperwork. . . . with each of our names at the top. . . . in the same envelope. Yes, it's to the same address, but when my wife, and I get similar mail, we each get the notice(s) in separate envelopes to the same address, to each of us.

Received recall(s) today for Tenere and FJR switches. Both were in the same envelope too. A year or so ago I replaced the FJR switch but it looks like that replacement was prior to the new PN revision. Damn. Not a quick job on the FJR. The pigtail is 36" long with the connector buried in the LH nose harness.

I'm beginning to get the feeling even though the recall seems relatively simple I will take my chances and just buy a switch if/when it goes bad for the $75 rather than risk messed up repair of something not broken. It's sad when you can't even trust a dealer to properly inflate a tire let alone do a simple recall without fricking up the entire motorcycle.

My 2014 is at Vickery Motorsports getting the Recall done.
I didn't get a letter, but I checked the VIN and it was listed on the Yamaha site.

Vickery is a good dealer, I've been dealing with them for 40yrs. I just can't go there again because of covid masks. The thought of being seen or seeing my old friends looking like dimfricks just keeps me away. I can only go where no one knows me and I don't know them.

I haven't gotten a letter, but I got mine second hand and I never registered with Yamaha, unless the dealer who did the first valve check did it. I did find my early 2014 ES was on the web site lookup. It will be interesting to see how available these switches are. Also interesting they say don't ride the bike until it's performed.

I am notified too. I think I will just wait out the part failing. Brake Lights: Check! Cruise Control: Check! Everything I need, nothin I dont. There is a long thread on this forum about the discovery of the switch and it's failure effects on cruise control, by me and a couple other inmates, many years ago now. There is an identical switch in the Clutch Lever Perch!

If you’re licensed and registered with the State, Yamaha will find you!

well my dealer just called me to say the replacement switch part is in, I just need to turn up and they will change it, still adamant its only a 20 minute task!! Weather has turned quite cold so will wait a week or two before going (I am a wimp!) waiting for it to get a bit warmer (currently 34F).

No letter for me because Yamaha doesn't know who I am but I'm on the list. Called my local dealer and they said they need the bike to order the part and must keep the bike in the process. They're backed up like two three weeks but said it shouldn't be a big deal (i.e. I'd be out a few weeks, I'm sure!). I'm going to put it off for now until after the Noobs rally in late March I guess. I called Yamaha about getting on the list but they said I have to go to a dealer with proof of purchase (with a vague description thereof) in order to register with them. Service guy was *supposed* to call me back today indicated what, exactly, I need to do it but he didn't :-/

The local dealer here in AZ just needed the SN to verify the recall, and order the part. Took it over the phone.
