S10 won't start

Hi all, I hadn't used my S10 for 2 or 3 months and it's been sat in the garage with its old fuel for that time, when I went to start it it wouldn't.
I recently changed coils and plugs and a liberal coating of dialectric grease to prevent the dreaded cold damp start situation and it's been fine until today.
It's warm at the moment (21 degrees centigrade) so I wasn';t expecting a problem as it's been so reliable.
I can smell unburnt fuel coming out of exhaust but not even a misfire-nothing.
Battery in good condition- changed that not long ago.
It turns over fine but no start.
Where do I start?

Make sure your battery is fully charged. On my goldwing (I know it might be different), if the battery isn't fully charged there will be enough power to crank the starter, but enough to simultaneously produce adequate spark. The result is what you describe - cranks, doesn't fire, and unburned fuel. A full battery kept on a battery tender prevents this from happening. You may have flooded the engine if you cranked a lot, which will foul the plugs. I'm not sure if there is a procedure for the S10 to have it crank but not inject fuel.

when you press the start button are you hearing a click click

rob
No, it starts turning over like a good'un but no fire.
Anticipating your further comment, I've put the battery (which is quite a recent addition) on charge, when I go to the bike tomorrow, I'll retry.
Thanks Rob.

I'm off on a 3 1/2 week jaunt on my Sportster on Friday morning so I may have to lift the tank and check plugs etc at end of June if it doesn't fire tomorrow.

I bought mine and put on truck .. got home late it rained and was damp. next morning no start.
cranked lethargically as it still seems to do. dont rule out battery even though new. I am on my 3rd agm for the ktm under warranty this year.
put it on charge for a few hours and it fired instantly

I try to keep the old battery(2018) alive by keeping it plugged in during off hours.

Twisting the throttle doesn’t open the throttle bodies any. I’ve had mine open and locked. I’ve probably had 5-6 n 70k miles 10 years. Most of my hard stats were before I had it flashed. I’ve never had it strand me but I got nervous the first 2 times. I just waited 10 minutes and hit it. If I have the throttle WFO. It’ll redline instantly. I’ve tried to cause a hard start at the house and could only it get it to fart a time or 2. The mystery continues. Never leave Without my lithium jumper

Thanks Tenman, but I'm puzzled as to what you're saying there, do I WOT from a start to get it used to running, or attempt a normal start and then WOT if that doesn't work?

Just about to go to freshly recharged battery in bike, just want to know if I should WOT from the get go or attempt a regular start first?

Your post #4 seems curious, as these bikes turn slowly on the starter at the best of times, even with the decompressor functioning correctly.

Let's hope a fresh WOT start attempt will sort things?

Hard start is a way to common issue with the 1200 Tenere, here is a 53 pages long discussion about it, hopefully it will be of some help to you.

I had my S10 shipped from US to Germany. Bike sat for 8 months. I had no ethanol premium fuel from US in bike and started like it was running a day ago. I have the larger yuasa battery.
Then I filled with 100 octane (red fuel) in Bulgaria and stored for 9 months. Went to start and just turned over for 20 seconds. I could smell normal burned exhaust but not a sound of wanting to fire.
I charged battery and tried again. As it was turning over, I went to WOT and noticed the motor started to help the starter turn and again smelled burned fuel.
Charged battery again and 3rd time at WOT, motor started helping turn over more and went enough headlight turned on. One more try and was running and idling as if nothing happened.
I know with WOT, the throttle bodies do not open throttle plates to open position but I feel it had an affect on fuel or ignition changes that helped.
Hopefully all good for you.

Ok. I started it turning over with freshly charged battery and a couple of seconds in I whacked in WOT just in case and it soon roared into life.
A couple of things I should mention:
1. I NOW remember that when I was trying to start it before, the headlight dimmed with the frequency of the turning engine over-that should've been a red flag but it wasn't-duh!
2. After it was running a while, I noticed the grips heating up, I NEVER put on the heated grips as I have Keiss heated gloves-much better, so don't know how they came on.
All in all, a battery issue clearly, and having the grips try and heat up would have made matters worse.

Thanks for the tip about WOT.

I wouldn't be so quick to blame the battery. You mentioned the headlight being on, along and the grips heaters. That's a lot of extra juice being used on a bike that needs most of its available just to start. Whenever my headlight comes on without the engine, I turn the ignition off, and then back on to restart the sequence. Even on my previous "no electronics" bikes. But it is hard to tell when the grips are heating up.

Well you can blame the heated grips, or the headlights, or some accessory, or the throttle position, or anything other possible excuse. I blame Yamaha for building such a crappy starting system. After nearly 100,000 miles on Tenere’s I Recently installed a lithium battery in mine and it finally doesn’t sound like the battery is half dead every time I start it.
