I had a real good chat on the phone with the guy that had 3 setups from RT. Using the spreadsheet I made, reading these threads and the conversation I had on the phone I am leaning towards getting an Eiback 500 lb spring, using Karls spacer but 15mm long, and buying an upper collar from RT like Ed had on the top of his 800 lb spring. That would give me about 16.5mm total spacer with a rear suspension that should behave somewhere between the 8.5kg and 9.0 kg RT 6022 spring that many are happy with. I just have to see where I can get a 15mm spacer made. One of the things is that not everyone uses their bikes for the same purpose, has them set up the same, or carries the same loads. For me I am happy with the stock set up with the exception of sag. I use my bike for just running around and long distance touring. It is not ridden off road at all so I have no need for a real firm high performance set up. I just need to bring up the preload and firm it up a bit.

Sounds like a good plan. You can trade off some spacer thickness from the bottom to the top if you want to make the top one a bit beefier than 1.5mm thick, but since all the load is in compression, you should have no problems.

OK here is a cut and paste from an email exchange I had with Todd at Cogent. They are willing to custom make springs for peoples needs on their ES. It is not cheap, but for a custom spring it is not that expensive either.

"Nothing on hand as a direct replacement shock spring for the Super Tenere ES. The OEM shock and especially the ES can complicate respringing as often revalving comes into play. If you’re somewhat conservative in boosting the rate OR simply want to increase length to bump preload, improvement can be had. If you spec ALL measurements for the spring you desire, it can be custom wound. Cost would be $220 and probably up to 4-5 weeks production."

Hi all, I don’t know how valuable it is since the RT spring is OOS, but I have had my super T out on two track days and I can report that with the 9.0 spring the handling is vastly improved. I ran solo+luggage setting both days. I weigh 275 with gear. The turn in is quick, and unlike before it really holds the line through the exit. Before, even at full preload, I was having to really push the outside grip to stay in the turn. I have not yet run two-up with my girl but I can only expect good things based on what i’ve seen.

The ST is a keeper now.

In the other thread I had posted the results using a spacer and the Eibach 500 lb spring now that the RT spring is no longer available. It has transformed my bike. As with you it has quicker turn in and generally feels more planted on the road.

My wife and I finally got on the bike together a couple of weeks ago and did a 1500 mile long weekend:

The shock spring is officially a 110% success on my ES. She is about 180 with gear and we had bags and topcase loaded. The 2up-with-luggage setting was perfect. No more wallowing feeling, no bottoming out on rough bumps. Rock solid stability into triple digits, and excellent cornering manners.

I honestly can’t believe how transformative the new spring has been. I highly recommend it for anyone larger than the bike’s design parameters.
