Riding the Good Ride, Super Tenere does some of the TETS

i am writing a small trip report on ADV, and if its ok, will post it here too.

I have had my S10 over a year, and have yet to go on a overnight trip with it. I have bolted a bunch of crap onto her to "make" her more road worthy, but really it was an attempt to apologize for not letting her stretch her wheels. Right after I got the super tenere, i left for a 5k ride up to Maine and back on my wr250r... but i kept thinking of the tenere.

I have ridden the TETS on the small Yamaha, and thought that this big bike would be great on it... and what a chance to get to use the paniers and such. I packed up and headed out.

I took the trace to the 840 bypass, and droned on 24 east for a while. Stopped and got gas,

Then went across the street to the Outpost! Why? because America! that's why.

and what followed me out of there? I'll never tell...

My goal was to blast down towards Chattanooga and pick up the TETS there, and wrap it up to interstate 40. It turns out that it was a pretty lofty goal, but that is what I do... Plan big rides, not always ride big rides
This was to be OK though, as i was running solo and to point was to ride and camp, and this i would accomplish.

Then, a little while later, In the middle of nowhere, i had my first trailside repair to do on this bucket of bolts! ::010::

out came the tools...

and the day was saved! see, riding by yourself, you have to be ready for anything!

this little guy was hard a work.

this part of my trip was of my own routing, and i ran into a number of locked gates, so there was alot of backtracking. thats ok, there was a nice campsite near by.

I ate my tactical meal.

and called it a day... It was nice. it was needed. good to feel human.

The second day of my ride brought forth more adventure. Like i said, i have done this ride with my wr250r, and a group of friends. I had the thoughts of the challenging roads in the back of my mind, mostly to remember to fire up the gopro. the first time we flew through it without any pause. this time i was 200+ pounds heavier, and by my self. this definately added to the excitment. I have to say the s10 is capable, and would be even better with real knobbies. that being said, the k60's did a fine job, and got me through the worst/best of it!

I had the campground almost all to myself.

The day was overcast and cool, perfect for riding, but i was alittle surprised, as i was expecting blue skys and sunshine...

out of the gate, I got into some good warmup riding.

My mirror kept coming lose, I am going to turn in my reciept to my "YES" program!

And now the good stuff. It was all good, but here the excitement started for me. I was torn because here i have an expensivve motorcycle, with expensive stuff bolted on and i want to keep it nice, and I want bad ass adventure and riding fun... what to do? I have been reading some awesome trip reports on ADV of a couple who 2 up on a ktm 990, and do the scariest of riding. truely bad ass! If they can do it, I can do this little dirt road ???.

these tip overs were not at any speed... just a result of lack of commitment on my part and weight on her part... thats my story and I am sticking to it. really the only casualty was one of my ram mount arms...

when all was said and done, i made it to a great little campsite, right by a little stream.

and got a pile of wood!

I had forgotten a change of footwear... but was taken care of, these were left behind just for me!

Life is pretty good.

Before this trip, i spent some time in Japan, visiting my wife who is there working, and her family... as a result, i have been waking up in the middle of the night, ready to go! the rain started, and i thought it must be 4 or 5 am... it was 130...

good thing i was ready... coffee in the tent!

I was concerned about getting washed away in the middle of the night... and although that didn't happen, here was my quaint little stream:

I got packed up and headed out. wet gear adds to the adventure, but i knew i was heading home today, so no sweat.

I rode in the rain for a couple of hours... heated grips and heated seat are the bomb.
I got off the dirt, and saw that i was close to the tail of the dragon... deals gap.

It was fun in the rain... :'(
here is the damn dam from the ridge.

I then slabbed it home, the rain took some of my motivation to document this little ride. I was happy to get home and pet the dogs, and explode wet gear in my garage. Thx for reading.

Nowadays, whenever I ride my WR250R off the pavement, I'm thinking, could I do this on the Ténéré Beast? A lot of times the answer is no, not so much because the S-10 isn't capable, but because I can't bear to pick it up too many times.

It is interesting, the s10 is no doubt heavier than the wr, but with the wolfman bags and all the camping gear, and the weight up a little higher due to the suspension of the wr... the s10 felt surprisingly similar. of course the hard bags did some of the work for me, and i was still pointed up hill... at that point i did ask myself if i needed to turn the bike around and run, but that looked too hard, better escape up, as we use to say in climbing mountains...

the exhaust is the arrow header and leo vince can with all the baffles removed. I am very pleased with it.
