you can equally get killed on a long trip as on short hop, not uncommon are cases of fatal accidents on a driveway when rider hit his head with no helmet on a curb. All depends how much you value your head. For me helmet and boots are a must regardless how short ride is.
AGREE!!! But as I said earlier, we are adults and one makes his or her decisions and will have to live (or not) with any repercussions. Most accidents happen within a relatively close proximity to home. Just sayin

On that note, in a lot of states, provinces and jurisdictions, seat belts are mandatory.
Why so??

I look at it as playing the odds. Yes, I am just as likely to get hit if I zip a mile and a half down the road to pick up a frozen pizza for dinner. But- the odds- well, less chance ill will befall me if I am only on the bike for 10 minutes, vs. 3 hours. And besides- could be the damn frozen pizza will clog my arteries before I get hit. Maybe. It is about the odds, for me.

contrarily what many may think the more heat the more you should dress up

This is a complete fact especially if you are putting serious mileage through heat with humidity. In Nicaragua they are very conscientious about explaining that most rides, on rented Yamaha 400 enduros, which is what the national police ride as well, trips usually take well over an hour of ride time. With temperatures around 36-38C plus very high humidity, you absolutely do not want to wear mesh gear as you essentially are making yourself the roast in a convection oven. You really can’t consume enough liquids to replace what you are losing.

What is recommenced is to insulate with multiple layers and keep the wind out. It may be uncomfortable as all get out, having your core surrounded by heat near 40C, but your hands, ankles, neck and vented helmet do make you feel the difference.

It’s so hot in Leon that anybody walking after breakfast, is always crowding the thin strip of shaded sidewalk on the one side of the street. You quickly start doing the same, and you stick out much more as a gringo, walking anywhere else.

When riding in the serious heat be very careful of heat exhaustion as it doesn’t take much, and considering that you are on a moving motorcycle, and ambulance service is crap, as is real Good Samaritan knowledge of how to treat somebody that’s gone down using multiple fans, water drenching the clothes, etc., this can be life or death very quickly.
