Just returned from 9 day ride in Texas Hill Country. The 900 mile ride out there was worth it. Twisted Sisters were every thing I've read about them. Most of the people I met were very friendly. I managed to camp in 2 different municipal parks/ camp grounds one of which was Lady Bird Johnson park in Fredericksburg Texas very clean and only 10.00 per night. Fredericksburg among other things is also home to the National War in THE Pacific & Admr. Nimitz Museum I spent a full 8 hours there. I have to say what I saw of Texas was really nice. I really admired when riding thru the small towns they had their Christmas Decorations up and actually call this the Christmas season. If any one from Texas reads this tell your friends thank you for me.
Best Regards Malcom

This old Texas Scrooge says that Christmas season begins after Thanksgiving and ends after New Year's Day. I'm not a fan of Christmas creep. Reductio ad absurdum: Christmas all year equals there is no Christmas season. YMMV

Malcom,

Glad that you enjoyed your time here in the Lone Star state. Wife & I will be camping for 3 nights starting this Sunday (but will be in the motorhome) at Lady Bird Johnson park. Fun sitting outside and watching the planes doing take-offs & landings. We have Kerrville-Schreiner park here locally - was a state park but now run by the city. Have m/c tent camped here before when we were living in San Antonio.
The 3 Sisters (hwys 337, 335 and 336) are a must-do when in the hill country. Much better to ride them during the week to avoid the cruiser crowds on the weekends which clog up the roads.
Hope that you get a chance to come back and enjoy some more Texas hospitality.

I've been wanting to get down in that area for quite some time. I went to Big Bend earlier this year and I should have included a ride to the sisters. I would definitely want to do it during the week to avoid the cruiser crowd.

I'm going to start camping. After years of motorcycle travel I'm getting tired of the current hotel scene. It seems that the nicer hotels are getting stupidly expensive and the reasonably hotels are, in many cases, poorly maintained and sometimes just down right seedy. I have come across exceptions in both categories though.

I got tired of sleeping on the ground and started pulling a little camper trailer last year. What a night and day difference to be able to stand and not be on the ground. Well, if a little is good, more should be better right?

So I recently started looking for a minimal truck camper that can load quick and since I paddle more than carry the bike, will put the bike on a small trailer. Don't want a toy hauler or bigger trailer than that, also because I want to be able to stealth camp occasionally in airport parking lots when I get home at midnight. Sleep in it with the top down for stealth and pop it up for most other uses. Here is somebody else's:

We have been Truck camper camping for at least 15 years now. We pull a trailer with the trail bike and Michelle's ATV out west . I like it that we can drive into the night then park in a Walmart lot and get some sleep. When we get to the mountains if we see a good trail we just pull over unload ride then move on. Done a lot of remote camping with it too. Can't beat backing up to a mountain stream and spending a week exploring everyday on the trail bike.

I live in San Antonio and ride the Hill Country. It is nice riding. In fact, it is the reason I started riding again after many years of not having a bike.

Yes....3 sisters HIGHLY recommended. Also if in Texas and have time, check out Palo Duro Canyon up in the Panhandle by Amarillo! Also Highway 17 from I-10 to Fort Davis then head back North up hwy. 118 back to I-10 this in West Texas. Lots of nice open roads here in Texas to ride! Lots of ADV bikes out in West Texas. A Big Bend ride is required ADV riding...

Took the wife riding on the sisters last year around Thanksgiving. I forgot where this water crossing was ( it's not in the sisters)but I told her , do not make any unexpected moves ". LOL.

Last year I went down on my bike on a water crossing with less water than that. I bruised a couple of ribs. Treat them with a lot of care.

I think Texas is the only place that I've lived that has low water crossings like this. It's a P.I.T.A. when you live on the other side of one, and the water is up.

There is a good FB group that posts used Four Wheel Campers from time to time. Those are made so well, I'd not have any qualms about buying used. Just wish there were floor space enough for both wife and I in one. If you want to use a Tacoma/ Colorado truck, you will need to beef up the suspension. Or just use an F150.

https://www.facebook.com/UsedFourWheelCampers/

Most I've seen allow for one person to sleep inside without the top popped. And most have enough frame to lift the roof plus the weight of a modest kayak or solo canoe. Though you want to pay attention to leaving room for a solar panel and a roof vent.

These folks are a great resource- https://www.truckcampermagazine.com/

Texas offers up some great riding opportunities in lotsa differing landscapes.
We've actually got a rally comin up at the end of March (28-31). It's based outta Kerrville which is smack dab in the middle of some great Hill Country riding.
The Three Sisters aren't far from there & if you're more of a small county road rider...there's both paved & unpaved goatpaths galore. The list of rally goers is around 35 or so now.... We're using Schreiner Park as base along with the local Super 8 for moteliers.
The main rally thread is located on Two Wheeled Texans forum...
