Greetings!

I was a member here circa 2012, when I briefly owned a 2012 black S10.

Why, lookie here, here's my intro and a pic of my S10 from back then! I lived in Ohio at the time:

Some years have elapsed, quite a few bikes have come and gone, and I find myself living in Eureka, California; and back astride a just-acquired-from-a-super-cool-ADV-inmate 2014 S10. It seems like a lot of the shortcomings I disliked on my 2012 have been rectified on the 2014+, so that's good. Plus... cruise control! Plus... Yamaha blue!

I also have a WR250R.

I enjoy camping off the bike on longer trips, exploring the local mountains via FS roads, and generally all manner of adventurey-type motorcycle stuff. Always seeking riding companions. I also do a good amount of hiking, shooting, photography, and remote extended camping trips in a 4WD SUV (longest two being both to Alaska in 2017 and 2019, about a month each).

Job-wise, same as before. Municipal cop. Wife is a NP in a local ER. Kids are grown now and back in Ohio (thank god!), giving us a nice buffer zone.

Reach out if you are local and want to be BFFs, or are passing through and need a place to stay and/or local advice. We're basically on US 101, and it's impossible to go up the Pacific Coast without passing by our house. Always happy to meet other riders.

And, since these type threads are worthless without pics, here's a butt shot of the new S10 on its first ride - Bear River Ridge Rd, Ferndale, Calif.

Greetings from Idaho. Sounds like you have caught the Motorcycle virus! I’d love to meet up sometime, and ride. One of the rides on my bucket list is up in Northern California. Would like to get some gold panning in if possible. I’ve met and ridden with a bunch of guys from on here. Great group.

Welcome back and nice invite. My first extended S10 trip was the Lost Coast.
I may do that again this year.

Hello from Colorado!

A few years ago I rode through that area on my FJ1200.
Would love to get back up that way on my S10.

Ferndale as seen from the cemetery (aka 'Silvertown' from Joe Dirt)
Mattole Rd just north of what they call "The Wall" / Sugarloaf Rock,
Mattole Rd along the Pacific on the 6 mile stretch along the ocean between Capetown and Petrolia

Nice pics.

I ride that a lot!

Great to see you here again. May this Tenere not meet the same fate as your last one (and my gen 1 did, too).

welcome back, other than the lack of cruise control, what others things were missing on your 2012?
Well, it wasn't so much what was missing as it was a lack of refinement.

That '12 had a very bad stumble / hesitation / lurching on takeoff. It was bad enough to nearly cause a few crashes especially if the takeoff involved negotiating a turn or intersection. It was totally random, which made accounting for it and factoring in throttle or clutch input nearly impossible. Also... horrible fuel economy, unpleasant buffeting.

Some stuff that I disliked hasn't changed, but I've adapted my expectations. Things like weight, tire life span, etc.

The aftermarket has also caught up in the last 8 years.

I added a aftermarket cruise, it was like 500 and cheaper than a new ST.
Well to be more clear, I didn't jump right from a 2012 ST to a 2014 ST because of the cruise.

I had a 2012 ST in 2012; sold it after a few months and 8k miles for the reasons listed above. Then 9 years elapsed during which time I owned a bunch of other ADV machines, moved twice, and most recently sold all my motorcycles while pre-planning another cross country move.

When that move didn't happen, I needed to rebuild the motorcycle stable; and one of the machines on my radar was the 2104+ ST because of the mods Yamaha made to it after the 2013 MY.

So while you are correct, aftermarket cruise is cheaper than a new ST; I was buying a replacement bike and 9 years after the fact! ;)

"Same fate" referring to being sold off, or crashing? I seem to recall one of your ST's was in a crash... can't recall if it was you or your wife now? It's been a minute.

Mine also was wrecked, struck a deer in WV (unsure if you recall that and if that's what you are referencing?). Hit a pregnant doe. Didn't go down, but caused $5k in damage. Continued the trip with bent forks and the right side plastics torn off and the battery held in with zip ties...
