Rob, don't take this as a negative jab, because it's not. You're over thinking it. I just now walked out to the garage and removed the side stand spring and re-installed it on my '15. Needle nose vice grips are what I used. Remove the spring on the front end first so you're not fighting the side stand dropping.

hi eric,
thanks just wanted for some recommendations, did you have the bike up on centre stand, with side stand in the down postion with spring extended, or side stand up with spring not extended.

Put the bike on the center stand, fold the side stand up, (not in use position), front would be to the front of the bike. So, yes, not where the spring is joined half way down the stand. The spring is stretched out more when the side stand is in the down position. Do not try to remove it in that position.

It's easier with needle nose pliers or needle nose vise grips because you can grab the spring up against the coils, giving you more room to pull the spring forward and get the 'J' off the pin. Too wide a jaw on your pliers will interfere with moving the spring forward enough to release it from the pin.

I put mine on with a phillips screwdriver. Just put the screwdriver through the hoop of the sping, put the tip of the screwdriver on the post and lever the spring on. As you stretch the spring it will slide down off the tip of the screwdriver right onto the post. I fought pliers for several minutes and decided there must be a better way.

I have had good results using automotive brake spring tools on side stand and center stand springs. They work for removing and installing.
