From a "yank" that has had the pleasure of visiting the motherland a couple of times, my respects for the passing of a great Lady who garnered goodwill between our forever-linked countries.

I personally was a huge fan, as well as many in my family. Fond memories that nobody can change.

Cheers to the Iron Lady!

It is easy to praise someone you do not know and someone who has not effected your country's recent history. Maggie Thatcher and her kind of foreign politics towards Ireland was responsible for many deaths in Ireland . Keep foreign politics off the forum or people may start to praise some of the terrorists who have threatened The U.S.

She'll not be sorely missed by me, that's a fact. She destroyed our mining and manufacturing industries, introduced the poll tax which was later revoked because it was fraudulent, destroyed our communications network by holding back on fibre optic roll-out, destroyed trade unions and workers rights, destroyed our public transport system etc. etc. etc. I can't think of anything good to say about her.

I was going to comment on this thread, then I wasn't going to comment, then I was going to comment. Oh well, like a moth to a flame, I'm going to comment on this.

I always find it interesting how individuals from different countries will view the leaders of their country and other countries. Politics and those impacted by them can evoke very strong emotions. I can see in just a few postings on this thread, that this is appearent in regards to Ms. Thatcher.

So I propose, we leave this discussion alone and.... ::021::

There is a reason I posted in this forum. It was created for just such a purpose. Had nothing to do with our common love of riding motorcycles, or our obvious dissagreements on how we feel about Mrs. Thatcher.

But it is common in both of our cultures to pay respects. So I did. With no regrets.

That doesn't make any of you less my neighbor! Or my motorcycle brothers. Cheers

I don't remember her politics...

Whenever I hear her name I think of Austin Powers repeating "Margret Thatcher naked on a cold Day!" over and over to keep from getting aroused.... ::025:: ::025:: ::025::

May she Rest in Peace

I lived just outside Manchester in 1984, went to a Billy Bragg concert to support striking miners... Never met anyone with anything good to say about Thatcher's government. Regardless of politics though, you have to admire her steel will. Just a pity she was wrong about so much...

I thought this was a pretty fair summary

She did inspire a lot of music though!

Sinéad O'Connor - Black Boys On Mopeds

Billy Bragg - Thatcherites

Elvis Costello - Tramp The Dirt Down

Even when it appears that nobody approves of a leader, you have to remind yourself they had to get elected. So it's never as one-sided as it appears.

George Bush, even after relentless disparaging, held on to 33%.
1/3 of Americans never quit supporting him.

I suspect Mrs. Thatcher still has some goodwill somewhere. Just not on this board, it appears.

Still, it was a noteworthy passing. I'm just showing a bit of respect for someone that ruled in England but was well known in the rowdy States.

Truth is, we don't normally know who your politicians are. And sadly, our modern public schools are likely to never mention the Winston Churchill that I was taught about as a lad. :)

He made my all time favorite political quote. But I see it wouldn't go over so well here.

Hint: about the changes someone's viewpoint SHOULD go through from age 20 to 30.

I'm with Snakebitten on this... The lady had an iron will, and was a great leader, as evidenced by some of the remarks here - she stuck to her beliefs and led a country from double-digit unemployment to years of unparalleled prosperity. True leaders don't worry about opinion - they lead. Much like her contemporary on this side of the lake.

It's a shame that the labor movement has laid waste to many of her accomplishments - much like their contemporaries on this side of the lake...

I really miss the 80's sometimes...
