Guys, time has come to have the first valves check and adjustment on my 2013 Super Ténéré at 24,000 miles. I live in North County San Diego (Carlsbad) and I have had pretty bad experiences with dealership's mechanics in the past.
NCY (North County Yamaha) in San Marcos charged me $1200 for the first 12,000 miles scheduled maintenance of my 955i Tiger Triumph. And I had to redo the whole job myself.
BMW Escondido literally butchered my 09 BMW GS Adventure.
I purchased the S10 at Fun Bike Center in San Diego, but it is pretty far and they don't rent courtesy vehicles.

Anyone with a decent experience in my area? All input welcome. Thanks

Sorry to tell you, based on my experience, NCY is probably has the most capable mechanics of the Japanese dealerships in this area. I'd shy away from NC House of Motorcycles, based on my experience.

BMW Motorcycles of Escondido has a few good mechanics, and some I'm not skeptical of. Do you know which mechanic it was that you had the bad experience with?

I don't really want to make this thread a bashing thread, but... I brought my 09 GSA in 2013 to BMW Escondido to replace a bearing gone bad in the clutch/gear box case. Cost $2300 (poor engineering and typical BMW pricing). The bike was returned to me with the casing broken. The "ear" in the casting to pry open the assy was just gone. Shit happens. But that's where it becomes just unacceptable. The dealer just blamed me for it and refused to repair the damage. Long fight which demonstrated very poor ethic from this shop, before finally caving in and do the repair. I don't know who did the "job"and I don't need to know. The place is just not worth the customer's trust nor money. The good side of this is that I was so pissed, I took my check book and bought in one hour a Yamaha Super Ténéré while still in the midst of the fight with the BMW dealer. Never been so happy since then.

I just don't want this to happen again, hence my request for recommendations.

OK Guys, I found the place to get my Super Ténéré serviced in North County San Diego: Oceanside Cycle Supply.
After being overcharged and my bikes butchered by local dealerships (Triumph 955i Tiger and BMW R1200GSA), I was so afraid of have a "pro" touching my Yamaha 1200 Super Ténéré, I was about to skip the 25,000 miles maintenance. In particular the valve adjustment, which is a delicate and potentially disastrous operation. But I have it done anyway, by a small local shop, specialized in used motorcycles resale: Oceanside Cycle Supply, Oceanside, CA. They have four (maybe 5) mechanics, all of them experienced by more than 10 years of practice. Although they have never touched a Yamaha 1200 Super Ténéré, they took the job, pulled the manufacturer manual and did everything by the book. I think they spent way more time than they charged me, but the result is just perfect. All plastics were remounted right, no screw were marred or loose, all parts to be changed were replaced. I took the motorcycle for a 1700 miles ride just after, and the bike never seemed so powerful, and trouble free. So if you are looking to find a decent mechanic shop to do the job right for your motorcycle, here it is.

BTW, they found that the exhaust timing was off by one tooth. Two exhaust valves were off.
The timing being off can either come from factory, or the CCT v.1 (Cam Chain Tensioner), or during the replacement of the CCT for a v.2. Your guess is as good as mine.
As a result, the bike takes easily 8500 RPM before hitting the breaker, while before it had a hard time going up in the high rev. . And I thought at that time that it was already plenty powerful enough. Now it is scary powerful, specially with the flash made in AVC is full power-mode.

Fantastic news! How much did they charge you for the maintenance?

I won't say, since I am sure they didn't charge me the full price. All you have to know is that they charge $85/hr, and they do not seem to extend the time spent but be honest on the time spent. The valve check is something like 5 hrs according to Yamaha schedule. I don't know what they will actually charge for the next Ténéré.
