I am going to be collecting my new, (to me that is), 2017 non-ES in a few days time. It has a top box but no panniers so I have been enjoying this thread. I like the look of the Hepco & Becker Gobi bags, the Givi Trekkers and the Bumots. I would probably buy the stock Yamaha cases if I found a set with frames on eBay or similar.

Does anyone have pictures of the rear view of the bike with the above sets of cases fitted please? I would like equal width from centre line on both sides, so asymmetrical cases would be fine. Thanks in advance.

I have Tusk's from https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/. They were on the bike when I bought it but they are definitely affordable and can be setup on any rack system. Not necessarily what I would pick if I were outfitting the bike from scratch but they are really solid and seem like they will hold up well. They are not super easy to remove. But I wanted to make sure you were aware of the option.

Bumot:

Not the best background to help judge the width and symmetry, but they're symmetrical.

Thanks for the pictures Trey, I like the Bumots, they follow the lines of the stock cases with the exhaust cut-out and look really neat. What sizes do you have on yours ?

I haven’t heard of Hollan cases, but I will do a search.

The Holan Nomada's (non Pro) I had on my Strom leaved terribly. The previous owner that bought them said the company was a pain to deal with as well.

I priced out the Pro's for the Tenere and they were only marginally cheaper than the Givi's that have much better support

Who's used the Mosko Moto Backcountry 35L panniers? I'm really digging them, but they seem pricey for soft bags. I really like the mounting system and the fact that you can lock them to the racks. I know it's a small company, but i've heard pretty good things about their customer service.

Thoughts?

I think the cheapest AND strongest option are the Happy trail rack with 2 pelican 1440 case, those one are top loader. With this setup you won't mind dropping your bike when you ride some rought trails.

Research all the options and pick what you would buy w/o regard to cost. Then start hunting the forums, ebay and CraigsList for used ones. There are bargains to be had all over. Especially if you value function over pretty. ;) A lot of re-sellers are dismantlers that don't know that Jesse bags or Touratech Zega Pros are not bike specific. They list the pannier or side case/top box as fitting a BMW or Ducati or KTM not knowing it's not OEM bags and will fit any bike with the correct mounting system. I got a Zega Pro cheap because the seller thought it was for a BMW, (it was just like all the other Zega Pros and you could tell from the pics), and had a small amount of rash on the very top edge. Learn what oem panniers look like at the mounting points and what regular mounting points look like. BMW bags are labeled BMW and have different mounting system than generic Zega or Zega Pro and Jesse sells a part number for specific mounting racks, but the bags are all the same mount system for any brand bike.

Examples: Jesse Safari Left side bag for $249 BIN. EBAY LINK

A Pair of Jesse bags with GS mounting racks for $475 (current bid with 4 hours left), EBAY LINK

They're the smaller of the two options, 40/36L I believe.

I recently purchased some used Jesse racks with plans on using soft bags.
I was curious if these racks, like many I assume, are exclusive fit for Jesse bags only?

Also curious if anyone has adapted someone else’s bags to them, hard or soft bags?

Another two thumbs up for the Caribou/Hepco Becker combo!
They are not only crash proof, they are also awesome crash protection.
And don't worry about the warranty - you won't need them. Did someone say indestructible. Oh yeah! They may get scratches, but they will be last thing that breaks on your bike.

Does the Lifetime warranty cover them when you crash?
Just saying metal cans bend at high impact, and lets just say with 600+ pounds behind them and the solid ground.
No offense i love them but when they get smashed it's over and expensive.
I like composite bags they are fairly inexpensive and can take a beating so if they get wasted you just buy a new one.
I have Doskocil cases on my bike and have slammed them a few times riding and as they get scratched they never cracked or popped open, they are side covers not top loaders. Sort of old school and are getting harder to find in great condition.
Happy trails frames are decent and cheap.
This is my take on a low budget setup.

if it breaks they give you one. that easy

IMO, these are best bang for the buck. Not cheap but super functional. I have the Touratech racks and 35's mounted on my Tenere. It's close to 1200 bucks for the whole setup. I like the fact that you can get in and out of them almost as fast as the hard ones. And they also compress when not in use. You can also remove them quickly when not needed. I have locking straps which makes them as secure as any hard bag. When loaded up they are no wider than my bars.

This weekend I will be doing a test run with them all loaded down for camping. I'll post up some more detailed pics. In reality it will be very rare for me to camp off the bike. These will mainly be used for commuting and everyday use. I'm not much on loading the top down with cases and huge bags. I'm a off road rider at heart and like to move around on my bike. Also have the ability to bail off the back in an emergency.

As mentioned in another thread or two, a friend tossed his Tiger 800 a few montsh ago at more than 60 mph and it had the Moskos. They came out amazingly well. The bike was totaled.

What's the best hard-bag option for maintaining a slim profile (no wider than the bars) while maximizing space? Basically what's most like stock but more durable?

I have the OEM panniers on a 2016 and I like them. They are not as rugged as, say the Jesse panniers, but they are functional. As long as I press down on the lide and take the pressure of the lock mechanism, I don't have any problems. They're waterproof and will hold a 12 pack of bottles. I like the fact they open from the top, but that could be aggravating for someone with luggage or camping gear strapped on top. My line of reasoning, which may be faulty, is they might get destroyed in crash but there's less chance of them destroying the sub-frame, also. Easier to replace a pannier than tweak the frame. And most important -- I like the way they look :D
Ditto. I also have the inner bags and they work great. Whole system can be found used all day long on this forum for half what they cost new.

I scored a set of like-new OEM panniers from a fellow forum member and I've been very pleased with them. At some point down the road, I may elect to go with a different set, but these were half the cost and look / function great for my needs. Thanks for all the input.

I don't know what the width difference is between those Holan's and the Givi Trekker Outback's, but can say that the Trekker's are infinitely better in every way to the Holan Nomada's (non Pro) I used to have
