Dallara, I think I know why you never go to the "Gatherings". Your type A personality is such that for everyone at one of these Gatherings that might be glad to meet you and give you a big hug for all your help on this board, there are just as many that would rather punch you out for your "behind the keyboard" in your face attitude. Just sayin...

I'd love to go to "The Gatherings" (how many have there been, and have you been to? ::025:: ) if they coincided with my schedule, but so far, no luck...

But I'd be more than happy to meet with anybody here, no problem. In fact, let me extend an open invitation to host, act as tour guide, etc. for anybody here that wishes to visit The Great State of Texas!!! :)

C'mon down! ::003::

Probably why Dallara and I get along so well...even though we live 2500 miles apart and have never met. LOL

Dejavu thread.

Same content.
Same cast of characters.
(Including me)
Same points.

Same result, I suspect.

Fun every time though. For me, at least.

If I ever inherit a fortune, I would likely be easy to milk. But before I got to the bottom of the money bucket, I buy Eric, my Tenere buddy, a nice shiny shock.

He's the kind of fella that would smile and put it on just to please me. (A good sport)
And THEN, I suggest he is also humble enough to honestly assess the result.

He would like it. :)

Go ahead and just keep poking. It only makes you look silly. ::)

The spelling of your user name just isn't that important to me. Go figure. Yep, I misspelled it, no doubt multiple times, yet amazingly, you still figured out that I was referencing you. So it matters how?

I never said you didn't race, or that your user name didn't have significance to you. I only said it didn't have significance to me and I didn't enjoy watching others do things, like racing/sports.

As I said above, I disagree with your opinions on shocks. We can beat this dead horse all day, we still won't agree on many things.

I spent the last 20 years working as a machinist in the hydraulic tools industry. I know a few things about oems and fluid dynamics. And how and why things are made the way they are.

Your racing background is exactly why we have these disagreements. You have forgotten that what's important on the track or for competition doesn't always equal something of importance on the street. Most of what works on the track doesn't apply on the street. Or does, but to such a lesser degree that it's overkill for all but a few.

The OP wanted to improve "ride quality". I'm not psychic, I don't know what it is that he wants to improve. Ride quality means different things to different people. I also don't know what he expected he might be able to achieve for a few hundred dollars on the stock shock, but perhaps he had some direction to what he was looking to gain? It's hard to help the guy when we don't know just what it is that needs improvement, for him.

Good suspension is a wonderful thing. I've always maintained that. But the large majority of riders won't spend the big bucks for it, regardless of how highly it is spoken of. That's not a revelation, you know it's true. I just don't see how constantly telling people to spend the money when they are looking for some improvements is helpful.

@SB - You're right, same tired old theme. :D ::010:: I know what good suspension is like. I've had it. But I can't justify the coin for the Super Ten. It's a splurge for my budget, not something I actually need. Not having it doesn't seem to prevent me from riding, does it? :-*

I would love to see this cast of characters around a fire singing kumbya! That would be a video event for the forum to treasure!

What I would find interesting is a listing of the choices that we have along with some basic pricing.

I know we have these solutions, but there are some that I'm missing:

Penske
Ohlins
Cogent Moab
And another I can't think of right now.

Yacugar (Greg the Pole has this) http://www.yacugar.com/

Wilbers (Rasher has this) http://wilbersamerica.com/?gclid=CMqv5JX_2rgCFe-DQgodLgMASg

IIRC, both of these are emulsion style shocks, but I've been wrong before.

One campfire.

Chairs, cigars, and mugs for:

Eric
AC
Dallara
WFO
RonH
Pluric

And an airplane ticket to get GrahamD over here too.

I would NOT consider it an obstacle to cross the country to be there. :)

Whatever you say, Eric...

But to me "silly" is somebody who says something like "my 64k oem shock feels just as good as it did new..." and then admits they change their fork oil every 10,000 or 20,000 miles... :D

And it's always wonderful hear from somebody who is so clairvoyant they know what the "larger majority" of riders actually want, or need. I really had no idea you represented "most" of the riders out there in the world! ::025::

What, do I need to be more contrary around here to get invited to the party?

Well, fine - You're all wrong about everything! There!

Now, what time are we firing up the cigars and pouring the drinks?

Oh trust me, I know what YOU need. ;D Too bad you don't. And read the rest of the damn sentence. I did not say it was as good as new. In fact, I said it wasn't. A lot is lost on the internet in terms of sarcasm.

Nope, it's so simply you wouldn't believe it. That's why it hasn't occurred to you already.

I hope you can get out for a ride tomorrow. And that you enjoy it.

Had a good ride today, and indeed, enjoyed it.

Hope you have a good one tomorrow yourself, Eric. ;)

I am back! I have been on a 4 day trip with 3 others and had a great time riding my bike not debating rear shocks ::002:: For further info I ride solo and on this four day trip pack about 10 lbs in the rear bag and 5 lbs on the tank bag with 220 lbs suited rider. Stay on pavement or gravel and my 2012 just rolled over 20,500 miles. I have invested in Ohlins , Racetech, and a few others for my bikes and had the pleasure of sending the shock back in a few years and the service shop said it required $350 to $500 in repairs for a $900 shock. I sunk $25K into my last ZX-14 that was primarily a drag bike, an extra 6K into a KTM 990 so I decide to keep this bike as stock as possible so it does not become a BMW.
It appears from the long response that rebuilding the stock shock is out so I will just ride it and wait till it blows and then hunt for the lowest cost option. One of the bikes on the trip is a 04 FJR with 33000 miles and it is all stock except the after market windscreen. It has all of the required service and it still is a great bike to ride. It is so easy to get caught up in upgrading a bike to the point the sum of all the aftermarket parts just makes the bike more focused and not as good as a all around bike.

I still would like to upgrade the seat, shock, and fork but that would be close to $2,500 and I have the money but willing to live with the bike as is.

Your math is a bit of an exaggeration...

Forks: ~$625
Shock: ~$900
Seat: ~$400

Total: ~$1925
