Rear brakes rubbing sound / feel

Guys, I am experiencing a weird rubbing sound akin to brake pads when I do a long braking pattern. It only comes up once or twice during braking. I changed out the rear brake pads as they seemed a little worn (but nowhere near shot) but the problem still exists. The front brake pads look ok to me. I swear it’s coming from the rear because I can feel it on my right food through the swing arm. Is it possible it’s something else? I did just have tires put on about a month ago where I paid cycle gear to mount the tires but I uninstalled and installed the wheels.

I don’t know what else to do besides change out the rear disc?

When was the last time you washed her. Sometimes, if dust/dirt gets on the brakes, it'll do that. Rust will do it too. If rotor(s) get wet, and not driven, a light layer of rust will form. More likely dirty though. Rust would be very noticeable.

He found his answer over on Facebook. Haven't read the cause yet, but he lost a pad. I have a suspicion. The noise started after a tire change...

I was wondering if you found the origin of the noise you spoke of?

What’s the suspicion? I had old brake pads I put on. Problem still exists. I’m just trying to figure this out.

It’s not dirt. I cleaned the disks very well with water and then brake cleaner. I’d don’t see any rust.

I recommend starting from square one and remove the caliper, disassemble and inspect everything including the caliper piston. Is is possible you tightened the axle pinch bolt before torquing the axle? How about some pictures?

Someone on Facebook said it needed to be aligned so I ended up creating the pinch bolt problem after the brake noise problem started. So I fixed that and that is back to normal. In the middle of all of the I must not of repressurized the brakes right because I lost a brake pad. So I reinstalled old brake pads. What should I look for on the caliper piston? I’ll post some pictures tomorrow.

It is not even 20k yet.

It still might be worth checking. Also check the brake rotor for run-out. When was the last time you flushed the brake fluid? I'm really curious what you find. I bet it's something really simple.

I will have to learn how to check all of that. And Ive never flushed the brake fluid and I doubt the previous owner did either.

It’s possible that whoever fitted the tyres could have bent the brake disc if they didn’t take enough care. I know it sounds a bit far fetched but it’s actually quite easy to do without realising it

This was a suspicion I had. In that case, I would just need the brake disc, right? (see my link above). I guess I am going to take the wheel off and try to see if I can see anything obvious.

Yes, the washer is in the right place, but it is a little odd how the caliper piston is shiny. Something may not be right in there, because the piston is out further than it has was. (that is why it is shiny)

If it is a damaged brake disc it can be difficult to detect and almost impossible just looking at it. You'd need a DTI to measure possible runout or you may be able to use an engineering straight edge and feeler blades. Easy fix though if that's what it turns out to be
