rear brake light switch adjustment - replacement spring

Today I installed a set of Knight Design lowering foot pegs and I wanted to lower the rear brake pedal to match. Like many folks before, I ran into an issue with the rear brake light switch. Basically, you can only lower the brake pedal so far before the switch is activated and the brake light just stays on. The spring on the bottom of the switch is being pulled by the brake pedal... as you lower the pedal you pull the spring and activate the brake light. The switch itself has a little bit of adjustment but not much... or in my case... not enough.

This can be even more problematic for people with cruise control as I believe this will cancel the cruise control.

So.... easy fix. Replace the spring with a longer one. I found this package of springs in home depot's hardware section.

It came with 4 springs..... the 2 larger ones and 2 of the smaller ones. The smaller spring is what I used. Here's a pic of the home depot spring and the stock brake light switch spring. The larger of the 2 is the home depot.

The home depot spring is about 1/4" longer which is perfect. Replace the stock spring with the longer one and you're in business.

On a side note... the spring is connected to a spring loaded pin which seems to want to draw back up into the switch like a turtle going back into his shell. The stock spring is all that keeps it from going up in there. I had to hold that pin with needle nose pliers while removing the spring and installing the longer one. Would not want to let that pin go and find out what happens to it.

Second side note... as I'm sure it's well known on this forum, if you want to lower the brake pedal any distance at all you'll have to remove the clevis joint from the rear master cylinder plunger and shave a little length off the threaded plunger. Under the clevis joint is a cotter pin which will have to be removed first, before the clevis joint. I took off about 5-6 threads worth of material from the threaded plunger. Not much room to remove more than that.

Bottom line …. replacing this spring with a slightly longer one will give you plenty of adjustment on the brake light switch to lower the pedal as much as need be.

Thank you for that. I got lucky and was able to match and configure my ergo's with the OEM adjustment.

Thanks for this. I am a new Tenere owner and am having a very hard time with the rear brake in its stock position. This will help tremendously!

Just a heads up. If you get your pedal adjusted the way you want, then you simply adjust the switch to match. The switch has a bunch of adjustment. It's a bit of a pain to get it just right but very doable.

I knew I should have pulled that protective plate off when I was working on this last night. I was just planning on buying the springs. Now I'll probably still get the springs, but I'll definitely get back in there and see just what sort of adjustment I have.

Thanks!

You're welcome. The only reason I figured it out was because my cruise control would not work. The brake light just stayed on. So I thought I had a bad switch.

I did adjust the switch last night. Made sure to have the key on to test it. Looks like there's even more adjustment available and I will need it. I'm at that point where I need to remove the brake so that I can take a bit of thread off the bottom adjuster. I need just a tad more for my big a$$ feet!

This is really good to know guys like you and myself are aware of how ergos can make our rides comfortable and the handling/braking effective.

Thank you for the illustration/steps on how to shorten the brake link bolt to the rear brake pedal. I just did the mod this morning and it works great! Now, all I do is shift my toes over to the rear brake pedal instead of lifting my foot. With basic tools and a dremel (cutting), this mod only took about an hour at the most. Took me about 10 mins to figure out you simply rotate the black nylon nut to adjust the height ... I thought it was a 'lock nut' Any who I was able to lower the switch far enough (with room to spare) to deactive the brake light. Thank you again Guys!!!

CM,

I went for a ride today and found out that my cruise-control isn't working after my rear brake pedal height adjustment I did. I made sure that brake-light turns on/off with the pedal. I also hear a 'relay(?)' clicking when the brake-light goes on/off with the pedal. Could the computer initiated some kind of 'fault' code that needs to be reset by the dealer? Even though the brake light wasn't on, there was some 'tension' on the sprint/switch. So, I just re-adjusted the sensor height to a point where there's almost no tension on the spring when pedal is released. See if that'll make a difference...

Just a simple adjustment to brake switch is needed.

craigincali,

1st - I lowered the pedal too much & the brake light stayed on when the ignition key was turned on
2nd - I lowered the sensor using the black nylon nut till the brake light came on/off with pedal
3rd - Realzied today that my cruise-control wasn't working - Even though the brake light wasn't on, there was some tension on the spring/switch, so I lowered the sensor more till there's almost no tension. Brake light comes on bit later, with firmer pressure on the pedal. Yet to see if this adjustment 'fixed' my CC issue.

You were 'right on the nose!' After I removed all 'tension' on the spring, my cruise-control started to work. For kicks I re-adjusted it with 'slight' spring-tension on the spring and the cruise-control stopped working again but the brake light would function fine & correctly. So, for some reason, the cruise control seems to be getting brake light ON signal much earlier, BEFORE the brake light actually comes on. Hmmmm...
