I am wrapping up 6300 miles of the TAT and coming to Portland to ship bike home on 7/1 and flying home on 7/2.

Any Portland Tenere owners interested in showing a easterner who loves craft beer the best of Portland's offerings?

Will have no vehicle and be staying at some airport area hotel.

Best to email direct - trikepilot using gmail - as I am crossing OR over the next three days via the TAT

Should have come through San Diego. This placing is teeming with awesome craft beer. The scenery's not too bad either. ::003::

Portland is a good beer town as well, so I hear. Hope you get some takers on your offer.

And congratulations on completing grad school! I've read some of your RR on ADV. Inspiring story about switching careers at 40 and great trip to celebrate it. Now it's back to the grind? Good luck in your new career!

Thanks... but I am doing the TAT so San Diego is a bit a stretch.

Your Ballast Point brewery just announced they are building a huge new eastern brewery in my new hometown - Roanoke, VA. Deschutes beat them to the punch by a month or two so before long, Roanoke is gonna be a hell of a good beer town.

I know, you ended up in Portland because that's where the TAT spit you out. Just pointing out that for craft brew, SD's hard to beat!!

I'd heard about the Ballast Point eastern expansion. In case you're not familiar with their story, they started out as home brewers 20 years ago and last year sold the company for $1B (with a B):

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-ballast-point-beer-deal-20151116-story.html

Us locals were shocked. Ballast Point is great, but there are so many others ... Stone, Alesmith (look for their Speedway Stout), Green Flash, Port Brewing, Karl Strauss, and many more. Then there are the dozens or even hundreds of mom & pop breweries in industrial parks with roll-up doors. It's a real cornucopia of beer down here. If you ever get the chance, you'll have a blast. Make sure you have the Uber app.

Well acquainted with many of those breweries. You have many fine ones.

Just looking for someone who might want to introduce me to the Portland craft beer scene. Been living in Asheville, NC which traded off "beer city" with Portland for severla years.

Plenty of good craft breweries to go around. On the TAT... when I arrive in a town, the first thing I do is Google up a brewery.

Yet another reason to do the TAT...

trike -

Sorry to see you haven't gotten any takers on your offer so I'm bumping the thread for you. I hope a local chimes in and shows you around.

I googled a bit on what cities have the best craft beer and was surprised by the results. Portland is way up there (both Maine and Oregon), as is Asheville. Asheville really surprised me. Glad to see the industry growing and spreading.

I'm currently sipping an Alesmith IPA. Brewed about 7 miles away from my house. Just outstanding. ::003::

Trike pilot,

I haven't chimed in before now because I will be down at the coast with the fam when you get into town. Portland has some great local brew pubs and I'm sorry nobody has chimed in yet, this is a great place for beer! Let me give you a few suggestions that will be close to the airport that should be easy for you to get to via cab or uber in case nobody steps up.

Breakside Brewery 820 NE Dekum st
Nepo 42 NE 42nd Ave
Great Notion Brewing 2204 NE Alberta
Alameda Brewing 4765 NE Freemont

These are all in NE Portland and close to the airport. Not sure how much time or how many you will be able to visit but these four have outstanding local beers. Full disclosure Nepo doesn't brew their own but have a great tap selection, plus their barnyard fries are the bomb! My personal fav is Breakside, their IPA is one of my favorites and the nachos are pretty effing good. Alameda has great beer as well but is just a bit further out so that will be your call. Great Notion is 3 blocks from my sisters house, and while I haven't made it over there yet she says the beer is outstanding. I also have a couple buddies who live nearby the GN and say the same, so I feel I can safely recommend them. There are many more in the area but these would be my top picks. Hope this helps, safe journeys buddy.

Sorry no one has jumped up to give you a tour. Lucky Lab is another good brew pub in P-town. The airport is sort of out away from town though so not really feasible for you to do a cab tour w/o spending more $$ than reasonable. There is the Max light rail line and you could take the Red line into Clackamas, but that area is not especially great for brew pubs. Could also take one of the other lines, (Blue?) to downtown, but as a road weary traveler, exploring solo via mass transit isn't a lot of fun.

Too bad you don't have a day or three to explore Oregon. Day ride to the coast, plenty of fun and tasty places to explore from Astoria to Newport and still be back in Portland for the night. Not to mention good roads along rivers, over mountains, etc. I moved away 5 years ago and miss the diversity of Oregon/Washington.

Eric - just rode the 101 up from port orford. Hit many of those spots you listed. Great riding road indeed. My Portland experience will have to come later. I am exhausted and looking for home and to not be sitting on the bike on a gravel road.

The Rumbux - as usual - did their job and i did put them to the test. The HD lowers came thru unscathed minus scratches. The older uppers have been "recofigured" and will likely need some persuasive remodeling upon their return.

Hope beers and food in Portland meet all expectations. Hopefully you can make it back here for a couple days to sample our many fine breweries, and if so I would be glad to show you around. Glad Fancy got you here in one piece, safe journeys home.
