Well, if it works for you, that's all that matters. Nice Job. I put mine in the traditional location off of the mirror stem and painted the bracket black.

I considered that location, I think I must have seen those pics on the forum before, but decided I wouldn't be able to operate them with the muffs on.

That's what I figured. I have never used muffs, but my son has them on his ATV and likes them a lot.

Muffs do most of the hard work, 8C/46F this morning, no need for heated grips as the muffs do the heavy lifting. When the heated grips do go on they are rarely above the minimum setting even when the temperature is below freezing.

They look the right shape but without scale you can't tell if they are 090 size. What you are after is sumitomo 090 male pins. Eastern Beaver sell them but there is a $20 minimum order fee there, which is fine if you are buying other things like a fuse panel. I ended up buying a 6-pin 090 size sumitomo male plug off ebay so I had enough pins plus spare if I made a mistake for wiring two pins on both connectors, cost over £10 so a bit of a rip off (item # 161059269184).

Hi frez - thanks for the detailed thread and install pics - i like the mounting location, although not sure if i could live with it. No muffs mean i like to put them on 100% to start with and then adjust to 50 or 40 "on the move" - your controller location, while neat, probably doesn't help "on the move" button changes.

Now then - the other thing it does it no have a prominent light to tell you you have left them on when you turn the bike off -but using the OEM connector does solve that as the power is only when the engine is running or the ignition is on (depending on the two wires you used). I'd like to change mine to be connected to the OEM connection - but i am confused on which connections are required. are you saying that on your bike both the male and female connector were present, but there were no pins in the male connector. (and therefore confirm that it is a female connector on the "bike" end of the connection?) - is this correct?

might you have a link to show us what you bought to make the connection?

the oxford controller does flash the energy light and turn them off after so long without 'noise' on the love connection - but i don;t really trust it, and i do have a bad habit of leaving them switched on! :(

Correct.

I have no access to ebay where I am at the moment, but if you search ebay for item 161059269184 that is what I bought simply for the pins.

Re: Oxford Premium Adventure Heated Grips Install

sorry - i'm labouring this - but have been trying to get it right in my head for a while....

the female end of the plug is attached to the bike loom - so the grips need putting on a corresponding 4-way male plug.

(is the grips meant to be the 4-way one - the 3-way for aux lights?)

your bike had a male plug there but with no pins - i "think" on last look, mine did not have a connected male plug - but i'll look again.

if it doesn't have a male plug attached - i can buy a new sumitomo 4-way male here for £5.80:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JST-Japanese-Sumitomo-4-way-Connector-Male-/151130366191?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item23301260ef

But if it does have a male attached, then actually all i need is 2 pins which i could get by buying a 2-way male sumitomo plug like this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JST-Japanese-Sumitomo-2-way-Connector-Male-/150874166268?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2320cd13fc

That sound right??

thanks again

Sounds right. It should have a male plug on it with the pin holes filled with black rubber bungs (they come out easy). The OEM grips plug in with a 4 pin plug, dont ask me why, they only need 2 pins for + and -, in fact one of the pins goes to the ECU for some unknown reason. My guess is that the plug was not originally for OEM heated grips and they simply used it for that purpose later on in the design process.

If more than one person wants the pins there is someone on ebay selling 25 of them (search for sumitomo 090 male terminals) for £12 if memory serves, you could club together and split them.

Re: Oxford Premium Adventure Heated Grips Install

Thanks again.

For completeness, here is the location of my controller unit - the dealer fitted these before i picked the bike up.

Its not "ideal" - it can be used on the move, but not without taking my left hand off the grip. Its quite a neat location, but obscures the suspension adjustment (not that i adjust it very often) - i;ve toyed with moving it - i like the position pictured earlier from the mirror fitting and the plat bent so it sits overlapping the switchgear. But the current location doesn't annoy me enough to make me actually bother to move it!

Re: Oxford Premium Adventure Heated Grips Install

I've added another photo to the original post that better shows the location I have used.

On my last bike I used a bicycle reflector that attaches to the handlebars as a platform for the controller. After removing the reflective material with a Dremel it made a good cheap solution.

Finishing up installing the Oxford Adventures, (taking my time since there's snow in the ground). I installed the Kaoko throttle control with them. Someone had asked me in another thread about whether these two items fit together, and the answer is yes, perfectly.

Hi rotortech - that was me! - i was asking about the adventure / kaoko combination - looks well - so are the adventure grips the same length as the OE ones then? I had the adventure ones fitted by the dealer before picking the bike up - they do have a small (maybe 3mm) gap between grip end and bar end - like in the photo below. I guess it depends on how far the dealer pushed the grips over the throttle tube - but did yours look like this before you fitted the kaoko?

Thanks again

Re: Oxford Premium Adventure Heated Grips Install

I think 3mm is about the exact difference between stock and adventures. So they are little bit shorter, but the Kaoko still works fine. When I installed mine, I had control over how far I slipped the throttle side on, so I could keep test fitting the Kaoko. The dealer may have slid your grip on a little bit more than I did, but you will still be fine. The Kaoko kit comes with some spacers/washers, to install into the bar end, in case you need to "shim" the unit out a little for a good fit. I needed to add one washer, because with no washers, it fit a little too tight. If your grip is pushed on a little further than mine, you can probably install it with no washers and it will fit perfect.

Finally had a chance to install my new Oxford heated grips two days ago. To my dismay today when rotating the throttle open it doesn't want to return back to closed throttle on it's own. That don't seem right. I was SO careful with the glue and it went together without much fanfare. I've rotated the throttle several times and it seems that it wants to return on it's own but doesn't. The cables aren't binding either. So just wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue. Thanks
