In a moment of pure stupidity. I broke the thing that looks like a dip stick of the top of my final drive. How screwed am I? I got a ride coming this weekend.... Please advise....

This must be the venting, so unless it is possible that dirt can get in, or the oil will get out, this is not a problem.
Unless there now is NO venting...

Sounds like you broke off the final drive breather vent. This allows the drive to cope with volume changes due to oil and air expansion from temperature generated by friction and oil shear. This is an important part...you cannot block off for risk of pressurising seals and you cannot leave open otherwise your diff oil will disappear. Repair / replace...sorry. I was a brake development guy at the start of my career and then moved on to axles...breathers are very difficult to engineer to ensure adequate venting / minimal oil loss / minimal ingress of water, dirt, humidity...and oil choice and level has a big effect on diff temperatures / life.

According to Parts Bandit its only a 15 dollar part... So this is not to big of deal I don't think. of course probably have to take diff apart to replace. I don't know what the hell possessed me to think it was the dip stick and it was stuck. So I get the channel locks and snap! ::010:: Retard ::026::

just as a rule there are no dipsticks on rear ends aka final drives whether on a bike or my 3/4 ton truck . the cap on the side where you add the lube till level is all you get or that is needed..... we all do dumb stuff , I just don't tell anyone about it.... it would be a list to long to tell...

If the hole is not wide open for rain and dirt to fall in and if you are not riding across water, you could just duct tape some fine Scotch Brite over it and enjoy your ride till you can put the replacement in.

No big deal - it is just tapped in, so if you can get a vice grip on the stub you should be able to twist it back and forth and it will come up and out. In the meantime any sort of cap or cover could be stuck on temporarily, just don't block the small hole.
