Oil Filter Protector/Cover?

Hi all... I'm looking for a sort of "hard hat" for the oil filter. Can anyone recommend thru experience a hard filter protector/cover? (No ziptied coozies lol)

I ride mostly road with a little dirt and some gravel roads, so my only concern would be an unlucky stone hit to the oil filter. I don't (and won't) encounter the type of terrain to justify a full-on skid plate.

Haven't heard/seen one just for the filter.

Be aware that the oil sump plate is the Achilles heel and there've been people who've had road debris put holes in them.

A skid pan is really the best way. You could find a plastic or aluminum filter wrench cup, drill and tap a couple set screws to lock it on.

Agree with the skid pan recommendation. The biggest dent in my pan actually happened on the road. Big stone or chunk of metal spit out from under a car ahead and left of me. Hate to think what would/could have happened with no plate on there!

I've felt more "stuff" hit by feet riding this bike than any before. Stuff that I don't even see. I've often wondered if the skid plate has anything to do with it; deflecting debris instead of absorbing.

For when you want to protect the motor / oil filter and surrounding components.

(Bike went off the highway @ 70-80 mph and cart-wheeled into the desert. The rider said the motor was completely OK, the bike was trashed. Tow truck driver took this photo)

I have seen protective covers like this for Gold Wings. Here's one from Triumph. Maybe get the dimensions from the Triumph oil filter and see if it fits or take an S10 filter to a Triumph dealer and see if it will work.

Here's some more info. I did some cross referencing and it looks like the Wix 51358 filter pictured on the Triumph Tiger 800 also fits our Super Teneres. I would still verify the fit on whatever oil filter you are using before buying one of those covers.

Upon further reading i will go with a skid plate. I had no idea the sump was that susceptible to damage. Looks like the T-Rex brand suits my needs (good mounting points, coverage, price, and door for oil filter).
Anyone happen to know if it fits with Altrider crashbars?

Skid plate is a good choice! I run one also (OEM). There are some threads about skid plates and all info you might need is there. Just use the search box. It looks like TABASCO makes the most bulletproof one.

Not sure what a zip tied coozie is, but I have used a stubbie cooler. [Neoprene cover that slips over a small bottle or can of beer to keep it cool]

If you ride almost all street you may not need bars and they add high weight. The only real risk is that a hard enough drop on the left occasionally will push the fan into the radiator, but it takes a good hard fall.

With all due respect, I gotta disagree. Every one of my numerous drops have been on pavement. Thankfully all were relatively low speed, but without crash bars, the damage would have been expensive. (the one exception was a high side on the RT; destroyed L/R crash bars, body panels, and one helmet. But, no hospital visit)

I do agree that you might not need indestructible bars. Here's the light weight, compact ones I use.
