Hey SSBW, how y'all doin?
Yes, absolutely, oil and filter change along with the "pumpkin" fluid change.
On that note, have close look at the drain plug bolt as it has a magnetic stem on the inside of the plug.
Obviously, to collect any metallic debris, which could be tell tail of a pending failure of the transmission.
I've never observed any matter on this magnetic probe on my bike. My bike 2018 ES is running great...however my left hand is killing me particularly after a full day of riding as I have arthritis in my hands and fingers, hence an interest in a DCT Africa Twin.
Not sure why Yammy hasn't upped their game and offered a DCT in both the Tenere and the FJR.
These magnetic probes on the inside of oil drain plugs are used extensively on airplane gas turbine engines, I know, as I flew airplanes for a living.
My Tenere has 46,500 km now, not bad for two riding seasons eh?
I'm thinking of going back or forward to a new Africa Twin in a DCT.
Hope you had a great riding season as well.
Best

I am well thanks, got about 9000 km on each of the bikes so that was pretty good. Had a nice trip up to Manitoulin and over to the Soo. Did some nice off road stuff around Espanola and up near Bon Echo. Overall a good year. As far as Yamaha not upping their game, considering they still don't have self cancelling turn signals or the ability to go from kilometers to miles I think a DCT is way off in the distance! Not sure that I would want to go back to the chain though and no cruise control on the AT. Hope your sister is doing well.

Although the drive has a magnetic drain plug I have magnets on my fridge stronger than the stock one.
One of the things I did with my first oil and drive fluid change was to replace both oil plugs with Dimple magnetic drain plugs as well as the replace the stock magnetic drive plug with Dimple as well.
Some may say this is overkill but it gives me piece of mind.
Whatever floats your boat.

I also know some engine builders who swear by filter mags when breaking in new race engines.

Ah, Manitoulin Island, lovely area to ride. Did you know that there a good coffee shop in Gore Bay.
I know the Espanola area quite well as I flew seaplanes in the summer season of 1982...oops, just gave away my age.
The 2020 Africa Twin has cruise, but still a chain drive.
Looking forward to another season of riding, oil changes all done putting both bikes away soon
I bought a gently used Zuki dr650 recently.

the new AFrica Twins do have cruise control and if I ever do switch Adventure bike it most likely would be a new Africa Twin with cruise control, tubeless tires and DCT .

I also own a DR650. May I recommend DRRiders as a forum to join. It's a lot like this forum, good people and lots of good information to share. Also check out ProCycle for accessories.

A friend of mine lives up that way so we had a guide, we did hit Gore Bay, actually was the only place that we saw deer, but most of the 'downtown' was closed. Also made it out to Meldrum Bay. This is the view of Gore Bay from the Look Out, you can see how empty it is and this is in the middle of July.

I did not know that about the AT, when I looked at it in 2018 I didn't think that it had cruise or tubeless tires.

I think the Africa Twin hatches cruise control in 2020, but not all models.
I'm in Canada and we only get certain models of bikes.

Sod that! Going back to a chain drive? That’s why I take my Zx14r off the road during winter

Hello Shumba. I’m in Nova Scotia. I have a 2016 Super T that’s new to me. Looking for oil to do my first oil change. I’m looking for middle of the road quality or above. But, I’m having a hard time finding oil that is JASO MA and SG or higher. Really weird! What’s been your experience buying oil in Canada? I did find “Formula 1“ motorcycle oil from CDN tire- non synthetic. Why is this so hard? What am I missing? I’m planning to go with 10W-40. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using Motul semi synthetic 5100 10w40 oil. Unless you are riding extremely hard, that is, on the track...its not really a track bike, or riding off road on trails using tons of throttle,
Motul oil is just fine for the Tenere.
I've got 46,500 km so far and all is working flawlessly.
The Super Tenere ES is a great bike.
Hope this helps.

Fully or semi are fine as long as they meet the required specifications. I’ve used Yamalube Semi Synthetic from when I got the bike at 3k miles, to the current 35k miles.

I’m very likely to go over to fully synthetic after I’ve used my last lot of semi. I’m only doing this out of curiosity really though, want to see if it smooths out the gear changes or feels/sounds any different. Nowt wrong with what I’m currently using, just want to see if there’s a difference.
Okay, so please let us know, I will be very interested in your comments when you change to full synthetic oil.

As Shumba I do use Motul for the last year and half and no problems at all, using 10W-40! I had improvement in the clutch I have the suspicius that the previous owner was using vehicle oil, with no care, but after I used Motul a great improvement felt in the clutch.
Hope you can change your oil soon!!
Have a nice weekend!

Here is a blackstone lab analysis from early in my bikes lifetime for reference. This was on the oem yamalube. I am now running motul 4t 7100 ester and will get that to the lab soon enough.

I just use the Yamalube right now but will probably switch to AMSOil next time. You should be able to find Rotella which is another common one to use.

Motul 5100 semi synthetic 10W40 will do just fine. I traded my Tenere for an Africa Twin recently. I had a 2016 AT for two seasons and 30,000 km. Tenere for two seasons and 43,500 km.
Both are great bikes. I'll miss the shaft drive though.
My new Africa Twin has the DCT (automatic transmission) and cruise control. I'm using Motul semi synthetic 10W40 5100 as well. Also too, in my Zuki dr650.
