I did not do Imogene on the ST, I did not want to press my luck, I'm about your age. I want to take my KLR out and do it, or maybe the XR400.. And the comment about sand is absolutely true. I was on the north side of the Michigan UP on the ST in Sept where there's a lot of sand and it was treacherous, never again, just too much weight and it wasn't any fun at all. Damn near killed myself when the front end washed out and tried to throw me right in front of a pick up haulin ass the other way but I managed to keep it upright. Then I stopped and changed my shorts and repeated 100 times, this is insane, this is insane...

I'm late to this conversation, but wasn't there a video on here with Bob Hannah & friends riding the Tenere? (tried "search" to no avail) They made the bike look like it weighed 400lbs. Obviously skill was a key ingredient. But, the original question was "can she be taken off road?" Yes, yes she can. But, can you? (by the way....no, I can't)

Sort of. Maybe it was a "behind the scenes" video. There was a lot more of him and his buddies riding/playing in the dirt, making the Tenere look like a toy.

BTW you don't have to take it off-road to show what you've got :)

Urban enduro practice, great skills.

as you can see Super Tenere is not that heavy after all.

For sale: Yamaha XT1200Z super tenere. One careful owner. Never thrashed...

Nice to know that it's capable of such hoonery, even if I lack the skill to do it. :D

David Fretegne isn't as well known in th eUS as in the EU but has a heck of a record and yes, he is really tall. Not racing as much after a bad crash in 2014 but I guess 20+ years of rallies, MX, and world-level Dakar competition's gotta end sometime.

I noticed while skimming over this thread the mention of ground clearance.

I off road my ST a lot. I have a 30mm Jack up kit fitted and find that the 30mm lift plus the reduced weight from removing stock exhaust etc and upping the preload (ES Model) I get enough ground clearance to tackle most stuff.

I was running TKC80's and found them excellent and a true 50/50 tyre the only downside is only getting ~2000km. I have just fitted Motoz Tractionators GPS with the rear wheel mounted in the mostly off road direction. I have read comments/reviews saying they can be lethal on wet tar, but I haven't found that to be true.

I don't know what Imogene is like , but i took my ST over Engineer, California , Corkscrew, Cinnamon and Ophir pass. They were not a challenge at all.
