OEM Panniers??

This question is mainly meant for riders who already have the Super Tenere with the OEM panniers!!!

How are they? I can't seem to get a consistent opinion. I am NOT asking if you can get better for the $$$. I am asking if they are of good quality.

Quality? I think they arent bad and seem as robust as my HB Xplorer top box (if not more so) . They do have known issues, ie if laid down off road its possible to break the mounts but then I suspect most cases will suffer with 260Kgs of bike being dropped on them, they arent meant to be crash bars. Locks can be fiddly as they do two functions, one to release the case and the other to lock the lid and the centre point between the two is easy to miss.
I've had Jesse cases on an old GSA1150 and they were very strong but fugly and heavy and had crap locks , I also has the similar OEM cases on my old XT660Z tenere where again the locks were fiddly and yam issued a service upgrade to the keys (as they bent with use) . Price wise mine came with the bike so were ok if I had a choose from scratch I think i'd try Touratecs latest alloy cases though these may be a bit wider than the yam OEMs (another plus point)

I'm very happy with the quality of mine .. some are not. It depends for what purpose you intend to use the bike. Regular commuting and light touring .... no problem. If you intend to do the Dakar ... best do some more homework. Me ... I'd go the Zega Pro route. BTW welcome to the site. :)

Good To hear - I ordered the OEM side panniers as well - I did notice the fiddling around with locks issue when I saw the bike at Montgomeryville, but as long as they do the job, I'm ok with it.

The locks are not a problem ... not once you've fully understood what's going on .... they are fine. If fact the mech is pretty clever in its function.

Open: Press on the lid, rotate the key (cw), lift lid ... job's a good 'un.

Close: Rotate the key (cw), close lid, press on lid, rotate key (acw) to the mid point.

I tend to hold the key at the base of the plastic cap ... this ensures that you don't apply too much torque. To the uninitiated it is easy to bend or snap the key. I've seen it done on a 660 Tenere box which is very similar in it's construction.

I tend to have a light touch with everything so it's all good.

I tend to have the opposite effect on things. It seems like it is rated far too fragile for me, and despite my best effort, it will break even with my gentlest touch. I recall when I was young, my mother used to chide me as I tended to break toys she bought me within minutes. I always go for the over engineered stuff, that way it has a normal shelf life. My nickname in french according too my mother was "brise fer" = break iron

Any case that needs such attention to handling is a horror on vacation, you tend to get tired after a 10 hours drive, and then things tend to get well exciting ;-)


But we have had the lid popping open two times, and the seal looses its grip after 10.000 km so it slithers out its crevice, so the lid can't be closed before you put the rubber back in its place.

I am not quite as bad now that age has had it's effect on me. That is why we bought great bikes, we want to ride them
