I have only 1400 miles on the bike so far, but I've read a lot of: 'it gets smoother after a few thousand miles'.
I don't think it will ever be as smooth as my ZRX1100 I got rid of for the S10, and I'm talking throttle, not 4 vs 2cyl.

Just wondering if this 'smoothness' is a lot of just having put some miles on the bike, you have adapted to it.
It's amazing how the mind can adapt to just about anything you throw at it, as I have gotten use to the throttle much better, but in reality, its not great.
Just a thought............ O:)

If you aren't happy with the throttle response, perhaps having the throttle bodies synchronized may help. Adjusting the CO levels and the air screw mixtures effect low RPM response, as well. The ultimate fix is having your ECU reflashed. Good luck.

I've opened the airscrews and synched, prob helped a little and I know the re-flash would change things too, just wondering if time in saddle has a lot to do with it. ::017::

Yeah you're right! This bike is as smooth as the Himalayas, and lets not forget it sure makes a racket too. But you will adapt, it's in out genes......... or we die out. So, you will get to like/love the bike for what it can do, rather than what it is not.

I'm close to 2K miles on my 2014 and feel the engine has gotten smoother. You say it's the throttle. Do you have this issue when using "T" mode?

Of course the 'T' mode is much more subdued. I like that option. You're 2014 is prob better than my 2012.
I'm not really bitchin about the bike.
This is my first FI one and all my other carb bikes were very smooth across the RPM range.
The thing getting use to is the slight abrupt power increase when you keep the throttle the same position, as the RPM's increase the power really goes up at a certain point. This is just the mapping doing it's job and prob similar to a carbs diaphragms kicking in to air volume increase.
Not really what I was referring too originally though. ::001::

So how it go's.
I had a ZRX1200R yes 4 cylinders to 2 is a big difference even my Tiger 1050 triple was smoother, lets not forget your ZRX had Carbs and not FI much less Snatchy response with Carbs.
So my thing was like you I hated this bike after 10k miles replaced the Clutch basket to the 14 basket leaps and bounds on 90% of vibe gone, then at 29K after putting it off I had my ECU
re flashed by Ac.

I am a completely happy S10 owner, this bike is quick and have been seeing 10mpg more with fuel.
As I was riding throughout Colorado last week 1400+ RT, I had to ask myself WTF is Yamaha doing restricting this beautiful motor, it has so much potential.
Now if your willing to go the extra Mile and re work the ECU I do believe you will change your mind.
If by any chance other things about the bike does not tickle your fancy I would just sell it and get another Liter bike.

What vibe are we talking about your bike is a 14 so the 3 to 4k should be smooth as it already has the updated CB?

After 5k miles, I noticed an improvement in smoothness on my 2013. The motor characteristics are what they are, but it shows more "willingness" to rev and idles better than it did.
I have the re-flash, and have checked the synch once-no other mods to motor. I had a similar experience, years ago, with a BMW R1150R. There was a point, after about 5k miles, where it just seemed to settle in.

Most of the bikes I have owned smoothed out after an oil change or two, certainly within the first 1500 miles.

Again, not really bitchin about the bike. There're ALL different to a degree. I have the 2014 C basket, that helped, and I'm looking forward to the re-flash (maybe better air filter and exh can) when I have the money and decide where/when to do it.
I will say this too, this is my first 'new' bike so I never had to break one in before.

Guess I should post my original question again, about how the mind adapts to things............................ ::002::

As I read threads like these about relative smoothness, what really springs to my mind is "obviously none of you are transitioning from an 88 inch Road King". I loved my Harley, but the S10 feels smooth as a Rolex when compared to a Milwaukee paint shaker.

Seriously though, mine definitely feels like it has smoothed out since I bought it in August 2014. I've put 12,000 miles on it, and for the first 5 grand I didn't even use the "S" mode because it felt so snatchy and abrupt. Now, it's always in S, and I never use touring mode. The bike definitely has a different feel to it now, as opposed to almost a year ago. I just had it on a run out to Nebraska and back, and loved the way it rode.

Hate the seat, though.....

Now that I have had the flash I use T mode on the interstate, in the mountains I bounce from T to S.
I agree mine did smooth out after awhile but just couldn't deal with the 3 to 4K vibe that RPM range is smack dab in the middle of traveling speed.
After three or four hours of that I was debating on selling my Tenere.
Then I installed the 14 basket and now the re flash just sets this bike in the close to perfect category for me.
What would top it off if it lost 70 to 80 lbs. :D
And as some of you have experienced, this bike when it hits the ground it hits hard. :-\

Since 2007, I've owned a ZZR1400, 3 X GTR1400s (connies) a R1200GSA a K1300GTEE and a Versys 1000 in the same time I have owned a number of 70s classics 90% of which were 3 Cyl 2 stroke Kawasakis...oh I also threw a couple of Brit Irons in there ~ a BSA 650 Gold Flash and a Velocette Venom 500 single, I'm not including my off roaders ::)

My point is that I reckon I've had a variety of bikes to a point where I've sampled most types.

Now, my S10 isn't as smooooooth as any of my previous in line 4 cyl bikes nor do I think it ever will be but that's not what its about...its about variety

My S10 has become so much smoooother having now covered 6000+ miles since July 2014 when I bought it new, and yes, I really do think that I've grown to love this bike more as I've become used to it because it felt strange at first, but it just gets better and better. ::022::

I think its hard to make the comparison of throttle smoothness (depending on your definition of this) to a 4 cylinder. Also, you do have a 2012 so there have been many improvements to the 2014 and up. IMHO, I think you need to look at it for what it is and what you many want.......

I other bike a was considering was the Versys 1000. What were your opinions of that bike? ::017::

The Versys 1000 is a very nice bike and is a lot smoother than the 12 Super Tenere that I had but it is not nearly as smooth as the 14 Super Tenere ES that I now own.

I really liked the Versys when I took one for a test ride. For an all around bike the Versys 1000 would be a very good choice.

It is a very good bike...the latest Generation 2 model (2015) has been considerably improved over its predecessor, better brakes, improved much lighter bslipper clutch, rubber engine mountings, slightly more usable power plus plus

Its selling very well here in the U.K and comes in different options up to GT models, and still has a stonking engine which pulls like a train

I covered 11000 miles in 12 months on my 2013 model without a single hitch

Would I recommend one...yep I would ....having said that its no S10 :) ;)

Change your gear oil, if it does not help then sell it, no sense owning a bike you are miserable with.
I never indicated (in this thread) that I was miserable with the bike, and there are plenty of people here weren't completely happy with it at first.

There are just things on a 'new' bike that you don't get with a used bike. It's already broke in, accessories or farkles added or some issues already sorted out. I'm just going through those and getting broke in myself with it.

There are a lot of things I like about the bike. ::015::

Very happy with not having to think about gas until I hit 200 miles,
no chain maintenance,
tall bike as I'm 6'3",
great brakes,
Yamaha, so it's reliable,
decent power, hopefully better after flash,
handles really well,
it's different, not just another cruiser on the road,
that's enough for now...............
