Noisy 2104 Cam Chain Tensioner

Noise on mine is getting worse and is really 'clacky' at tickover, regardless of how long bike has been running. You can hear it anytime you are on a neutral throttle when moving. But disappeats when on or off the gas.
Going back to the dealers today to see what they think.

I've been talking with other S10 owners as and when I meet them and I have not heard this on any other....

How many miles? They are pretty clacky normally, but more so for a few seconds at startup if the tensioner is on the way out... If it's not the tensioner I wouldn't worry about it, I haven't heard of any other top-end problems that would make them noisy, so it's probably just the normal clatter...

It's done 22k miles now and the noise started at about 20k and has got progressively worse. The Yamaha mechanics agree that it is well beyond the normal S10 engine noises, but say it's not the clutch or CCT and Yamaha wont allow them to do any more work. I have to basically wait until it goes 'bang'....

So it's just about time for the first valve inspection, that would be a good time for them to take a good look. If there is a warranty issue they'll see it, and Yamaha will give the go-ahead.

Using a stethascope, I had decided the noise was on the top end, but didn't seem like it was up at the cylinder head.
Given that when riding along at say 3k RPM in top, on a neutral throttle, the noise was worse and you could feel like something was flailing about in the engine, I decided it could be the CCT.
So I purchased a manual one and fitted it.

Lo and behold, noise gone.

So don't don't assume that because you have 2014 or newer model with the 'improved' CCT and haven't done big miles, that the CCT can't fail or give trouble...
Mine has only done 20k miles when it started..

Anyway, now the noise as gone I'm back in love with the S10!

Using a stethascope, I had decided the noise was on the top end, but didn't seem like it was up at the cylinder head.
Given that when riding along at say 3k RPM in top, on a neutral throttle, the noise was worse and you could feel like something was flailing about in the engine, I decided it could be the CCT.
So I purchased a manual one and fitted it.

You checked manually that the cct was damaged?. The engine oil pressure prevents the cct spring from starting to bounce, keeps it stable as a shock absorber, if it is damaged, it should be easy to push it in. Be careful of the tension you gave to the manual cct. If it is excessive, the first (gear) bed of the intake cam shaft may suffer premature wear

Rather than hassle reloading the old tensioner, I just fitted a new one when I did the 56,000 clearance check/adjustment on my ‘15 model. The engine sounded the same as before but it gives me a little peace of mind, especially as Yamaha has updated the P/N a couple times since my bike was built.

Never checked it, just removed it and fitted the manual tensioner...
I'm aware of the risks of over tightenting.
