does that require a special tool? same as most shocks?
No. Preload is done by a simple plastic knob accessible on the throttle side of the bike. The knob is plastic, so be sure that the bike is on the center stand or lightly loaded if on the side stand. It has stripped out on several people. It's not really a problem, but a metal replacement is available. I never stripped mine during the 109k miles I owned the '12 bike. That was two different shocks though. The Gen II bikes are the same and have the same potential to strip if abused.

You'll be fine on the ride home. When I picked up my current Super Ten I flew in. Shipped my riding gear to the dealer with a dry bag. It was all waiting for me when I got there. Changed into my gear, put my street clothes in a dry bag, strapped that to the bike and had a nice 1600 km ride home. Nothing but a few turns on the preload knob and adjusting the windscreen a bit. By the time I got home I had identified a few things I wanted to change or improve. I suspect you will also find a few things to do by the time you get home.

I think I have a tall factory shield sitting in storage.

Pm me if you want to pick it up. See you're in Canada as well so at least it won't need to cross a border.

I see no-one has mentioned the cam chain tensioner!! As this is an early model year, you might want to consider upgrading to the later Yamaha automatic cam chain tensioner!! That's really the only mechanical weakness on the bike, otherwise it's just farkles!!

Hey guys, I am huge Yamaha lover and have too many Yamah's to list, anyhow this is my first S10 i just bought 2012 model 34000km. going to pick it up in 2 weeks and drive it 2000km home :) What are some mods that I 'must' do right away or later? i'm a tall man 6'4 270 pounds 36" inseam. will be riding myself. I read about the seat levenling mod, will do that, when i get the bike. Are there any other things I can do easily for the initial long ride home?
Well, after you arrive home, suggest that you install some crash bars, saved my bike 3 times. How about extra LED lights to make you more visible to other motorists.
Tubeless tyres, buy an electric air pump along with a tubeless tyre repair kit. But the bike's 12 volt socket doesn't have sufficient amperage to power the pump so install a handlebar 12 volt socket and run the wire down to the battery tender socket, so if you ever need to use the pump just plug the battery tender socket into the pump plug.
Oh, there's lots more farkles to add...GPS, CAMERA, sky is the limit...enjoy your Super Tenere, great bike.

Does anybody else feel that buying an inexpensive plug and play, Horn is a good addition? I think if you ride in a bit of traffic these are worth the $30-$40.

What does it have for panniers? I missed if listed.
factory option side ones only. I was thinking about buying a top one but with the back seat coming off and rear rack lowered down it's a great place for tents and sleeping bags and stuff so im not sure if i will now

You really should check your VIN. That and listen for the tell tale signs. I don’t know if I would fix anything that wasn’t showing need of replacement. I’m sure mine will eventually need one, but since I have no symptoms yet, I’ll wait until I plan on tearing into the motor for things like cleaning out the air box, synchronizing the throttle bodies again as the bike hasn’t been running every season since 2014, plus I’ll check/replace the spark plugs and check the valves as long as I am pulling all the outer stuff already.

I will probably replace the battery as it’s going on it’s 7th or 8th year in age.
