Just bought a beautiful 2012 Super Tenere and it won't start. Tried jumping the battery but no go. The bike ran fine 2 days including stop and go and highway without trouble. Checked and added fuel, charged battery overnight with a "Genius" charger. Still won't fire. Also, I checked the fuses. Everything works including horn is nice and loud. Yes, it is in neutral and side stand up.

Does the starter rotate but does not start? ... did you try another coded key? ... do you have another coded key or magnet along with the motorcycle key? .... do you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key to ignition? ...if it is not in neutral or has the side stand low, when you press the "run" button, the starter "does not turn"

Kill switch in correct position?

What country do you live in ? If it’s USA most Tenere’s in USA don’t have coded keys, mine doesn’t.
Unfortunatly the no start issue happens with the 2012-2013 Tenere’s occasionally.
In 50,000 miles it happened to my previous 2013 twice, fortunately it happened at home both times.
Eventually it will start like it’s supposed to, at least mine did.
Has the wiring recall been done ? If not I recommend contacting a dealer about getting it done.

I'd check the side stand switch just to make sure. Clean & lube, and manually check the plunger. More than one person here has found it to be the culprit. Oh, and by the way, welcome from Texas.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble so soon after getting the bike. That is disappointing for you i'm sure. there is a book that could be written from this forum on solving issues. It is in here if you read enough. Good luck and let us know what the problem was. After that you will enjoy the bike! Welcome from KY.

No coded key, no mention of recall, yes the side stand plunger is working, yes I tried starting with the clutch pulled in, yes the engine turns over, yes the neutral light is on, no the engine won't fire. I own and have owned motorcycles all my life ranging from a 1926 Indian Scout that I currently race in AHRMA hand shift class to an Aprilia liter bike (10 years of near death experiences)! Not bragging, just to let you know I have a pretty complete shop and am used to bikes not running when they should. I bought this one because I'm tired of fixing before riding. Yes, my BMW dealer is expensive but necessary, no I don't want to try bump starting this big mother without plenty of help (I live on dirt roads). Electronics are a bitch!

I jumped with a deep cycle 12V battery and tried removing the EFI fuse. The bike began to run briefly. With the fuse back in place, the bike only fires once or twice then just cranks over. This confirmed that the EFI is somehow implicated. Probably too rich to start. I'll remove the airbox and look for obstructions. If all looks good and the plugs are dry, I will have to take it to the dealer to check the computer.

Key switch faulty?
key Switch issues have been mentioned in the nearly 50 page hard start thread a bunch of times along with probably a dozen other possible causes, thankfully my new 2018 so far hasn’t Had the no start issue.
i feel very sorry for anyone having to deal with this crazy “hard start” issue.

Is it worth taking the EFi fuse out, turn it over multiple times to clear the bores of fuel, reinsert the fuse and try the wide open throttle start procedure?

To me it sounds like he has already tried that in post #16

Are you letting it go through it's little pre-start diagnostics. I learned my lesson about THAT. If I put the key in....and turn it on....and immediately push the start button....flooded engine. BTW, mine's a '17.

The most likely reason for your no start issue is the simplest one. It's flooded. What you might not understand is that the excess fuel has washed down the cylinder walls and removed oil, thus hugely reducing compression. Between the over rich condition and the low compression, it's not starting.

Pull the EFI fuse again.
Crank it until it's starting to pop and trying to catch.

Put the fuse back in.

Jump the battery to a car/truck.

Now, start with the key off, kill switch to stop and side stand down with bike in neutral.

Remember that the key switch and kill switch reset things. If you make a second attempt at cranking, you need to reset first to shut down the headlights and reset the cold start routine.

Now, key on, (make sure it's fully in the run position), kill switch to run, and crank with the throttle 3/4 open. Keep cranking until it starts. Don't go over 30 seconds.

It should struggle and then catch. It will smoke some and the exhaust will stink of rich fuel.

If it doesn't start the first time, reset everything and try once more.

After that, call it and take it to the dealer. Bikes with over 50k miles on the original can chain tensioner have been known to suffer CCT failure.

The primary cause of the classic hard start is firing up the bike cold, then shutting it down before it fully warms up. Interrupting the cold start sequence can cause an over rich condition on the next start. If you know this and realize it, then go to 3/4 to WOT immediately and keep cranking, it very nearly always starts.

This often occurs when a new owner washes the bike, then fire it up to move it back into the garage.

Thanks for all the help. No, it still hasn't started and it will start and run for a couple of seconds with the EFI fuse out then just fire once or twice with it in again. It doesn't matter what the throttle position is. It looks like the battery is in need of replacing, but with a deep cycle 12 volt keeping the voltage above 11V when cranking, that should be problem solved. I have had starting problems with another bike due to dirt and oil in the air filter. I'll save taking the air box off for tomorrow.
