New Model?

Neither the FJR1300 or Supertenere can meet Euro 5 standards so are being discontinued.

Unless there is a derogation, all NEW models must be Euro5 compliant from Jan 2020. Existing models as above cannot be sold without meeting the new standard from Jan 2021. There is a 'final edition' FJR for next year. Manufacturers will try to push the 2021 date out a bit further to clear old stock.

The MT09 triple and MT07 twin engines both meet Euro 5 so will be fitted across the range as far as possible.

The following is nothing but speculation, and personal opinion: The T12 and FJR don't meet standards NOW. I'll be real surprised if Yamaha can't figure out how fix that issue. Back in the day, the VMax didn't meet certain EPA regulations; Yamaha just made adjustments, and carried on. I think if Yamaha discontinues ANY model....it's not going to because they can't get it to pass emissions. Yamaha offered the FJR for LE in '19 for the first time ever; seems silly to do that if they were going to discontinue it. (of course Honda discontinued the ST1300 just as it was about to corner the LE market) As huge as the ADV market is, I can't believe that Yamaha would not have an entry; the T12 may get changed, but not discontinued; as good as the T7 MIGHT be, it is not designed to be a T12 replacement. And, as much as we talk about the T7, it practically is a joint forum. All that the powers that be would have to do is remove the word Super from the title to make it official.

Love my Tenere but it’s perfectly clear to me the engine is way over powered for the job, I am anxiously looking forward to a smaller lighter Tenere with shaft drive 3-4 cylinder engine that runs on regular gas and meets any New EPA requirements.

Groan.
We go thru this EVERY year. Here is the almost identical thread that there would be no more Super Tenere - - - dated September 2013.

As for whether there will be a new model and it's features, Yamaha is notorious for saying nothing till some point when EVERYBODY finds out at the same time. That includes dealers and the press. As for what features we owners want, we already know that we have Yamaha people on the forum and that they DO pay attention. I was talking to one of them at AIMExpo less than 2 weeks ago. One of his comments was that even they don't know at this point and whatever the factory is going to give us next year is already in a design to go into production somewhere in Japan.

The President of Yamaha Canada told me in May of this year a new Super Tenere is in the works...my guess is the earliest would be as a 2021 model with Euro 5 compliance looming & not wanting it to detract from the T700 2020 roll-out in many markets.

Given Yamaha's conservative nature my guess would be the addition of a full electronics suite w/rear abs shut off, semi-active suspension, colour display & a tweaking of the existing motor for increased output/refinment (perhaps under the guise of removal of the current oem restrictions in 1st 3 gears < 5,500 rpm and/or maybe even variable valve timing), improved fueling & perhaps an increase in displacement vs an all new platform.

The S10 (T1200) will remain a twin for the same reasons the T700 did not use the triple...pkging, weight, mass centralization, effective power deliver for low traction scenarios, costs, etc.

Yamaha will most likely follow BMW's GS playbook & continue to evolve the existing platform so not to disenfranchise the faithful while growing it's audience. Let's hope that Yamaha can evolve the existing motor, like what BMW did with the new 1250 shift-cam...which is a jewel of a motor with it's linear & impressive power delivery from idle on up & impeccable fueling.

Don't blame the bike because you bought the wrong one for your job.

For some customers, adventure touring includes 2-up, loaded with gear, on long stretches of 80mph slab, for thousands of miles. If you want to do that on a 700 chain drive, enjoy.

No doubt that 2021 will be the earliest Yamaha will introduce to the world some real improvements for the S10. The official Yamaha website was recently refreshed with the 2020 model, and I couldn't find anything new there :-(.

Based upon what I read on the website, Yamaha added an off switch for traction control, removed the heated hand grips (now listed as an available accessory and not mentioned as standard equipment), kept the same funky paint scheme and added $100 to the price.

Good news and bad news.

Good news is that the 2020 Tenere ES is on the factory website now.

Bad news is BNG (Bold New Graphics) again for 2020. People must be buying enough of them to carry on in the face of the new high tech competition. I also know that Yamaha has very limited engineering resources which have been dedicated to their other projects.

What I do NOT see on the factory site is the non-ES so it may've been dropped.

Back on the upside thoughts, I was out on my non-ES yesterday afternoon on some twisties to meet friends and then highway home in the dark and cold, thinking about how she still does everything I want. One of the guys has a 2019 GS and he's always talking about the dealer and little niggles and special stuff.
Special stuff?
Niggles?
Dealers?
Mine hasn't been inside a dealer since . . . hmmmm . . . Not even sure when.
