Hello all, I just purchased a 2012 Super Tenere. 18.5k miles on it with a lot of extra goodies (AltRider smash plate, AltRider rear rack, OEM panniers, Zumo 660 GPS, headlight protectors, and I think an aftermarket windshield.) I picked it up for the asking price of $5,995 with all that at a dealership. I'm coming of a 2016 KLR 650 that I owned for almost 14k miles.

Usually after buying a motorcycle, I have buyers remorse and I think I can honestly say that I don't have any when it comes to the Super Tenere. I have had a bad experience with Yamaha's in the past, but decided that this bike is exactly what I am looking for and decided to give it a shot. Hoping to do more off-road riding now that I can actually cruise comfortable on the highway rather than sitting at 5.5k RPM's at 85 miles an hour and being sick of it after an hour or two.

The question I had was regarding MPG. I keep seeing everywhere that people are getting MPG in the mid to upper 40's or more. When I went through a full-ish tank (refueled when I hit E,) I calculated I got 35 MPG. The bike has pretty knobby tires, I'm guessing 50/50's, so I'm not sure if that's a factor. Down the road, I am planning on getting a Power Commander as well as midpipes and slip-ons. In the meantime, I was wondering if there was anything I could do (besides being very conservative with the throttle) that can help me squeeze a few more miles out of the tank.

(yes, as you mentioned your self, first try to be carefull with throttle, and then look at mpg when filling again.
I don't think there is a problem, with other than the right hand :D)

Welcome aboard.
I can get into the 50s commuting but can drive it into the 30s when doing a lot of fast highway pulling a trailer or beating it on weekends.

Welcome to the forum. Panniers and tall windscreens impact mpg, (increased drag), but mostly it's in the right wrist. How you choose to ride will be the biggest factor. The power commander will only push that number down. :D Consider what you are trying to achieve before adding accessories that do nothing to the function of the bike. Consider a re-flash by one of the forum members or other re-flash options before buying a PC and pipe. The PC just introduced something else to go wrong and the pipe is only noise, not performance. If you want noise, go for it! If you want performance, that's not the route to it and there isn't nearly as much to be had as you may think in this world of lean tuned EFI engines.

Read up about riding The Pace. It's likely different from how you ride now. You're riding slow, you just don't know it yet. You can ride faster and use less fuel doing it. Building skills is a good thing. Have fun with your new to your Super Tenere.

::004:: You will find that you will up-shift sooner, down-shift later, and use less back brake pedal. Like they said....it's all in the right wrist. I haven't re-flashed or changed the exhaust. I keep mine in "S", and am VERY satisfied with the performance. My mpg stays in the low 40s, but I'm 300lbs, and I don't do much highway. ::001::

Thanks for all your responses. I do a lot of city/highway commuting. Rode a total of 200 miles today and MPG's dropped down to low 30's. I'm assuming that keeping it at 90 mph probably didn't help. I will definitely read up on riding The Pace.

I know it's probably all in the right wrist, I'm just surprised that I get 160 miles when E starts flashing. Coming off the KLR, I could get 190-200 miles before I had to switch to reserve.

Still, even after all that, I've already put over 1,000 miles with nothing but a smile on my face. I'm really loving the Tenere.

Hello from Palatine! I regularly commute to Lake Geneva (50 miles) and get high 40's in regular riding, and low 50's on steady cruise around 70. This is one of the best motorcycles I have ever owned. Does everything fairly well. Yamaha did a good of job balancing trade-offs with this engine and chassis.

Cheers, a nice move up from a KLR .

My mpg on my new stock 2017 has been above 45mpg, few tanks at 49. My I40 cruising speed is between 75-80.

I am in Cary too. Let's get together sometime soon. I get a very consistent 43 MPG. When I went to Colorado a few weeks ago and spent a lot of time doing 80-85 MPH I was getting closer to 35 MPG so I guess it depends on your mix of riding.
