We do it all over the UK. I do a Bike Safe course every couple of years just to check for skills fade. It’s run by the police and they advise not to “filter” as it’s called here when the cars are going faster than 30mph. I do it when needed but I don’t particularly enjoy it. You have to concentrate so hard especially if you have panniers or a passenger. It’s not enjoyable. Plus some car drivers get annoyed and try to block your path by opening doors etc

I do it if its necessary but as you said if traffic is doing 30mph thats a resonable speed. Patience is your friend.

Whenever I see lane splitting it is done too fast 95% of the time.

1) In stationary traffic pass at a speed that you can stop if a door opens, etc

2) In moving traffic KNOW (as much as possible) that the person you are passing is aware (if indeed they are aware) that you are passing. If in doubt do not pass. To be seen: use a short horn warning note/passing flash of the lights/a nod to the driver before passing/speed appropriate for passing incorporating a secondary contingency option if the situation changes, etc.

NB: A horn note does not get heard by deaf or those playing loud music. A horn note/flash of lights can be construed as aggression by some. Keep the horn note very short, and flash of lights short too. Try to see the driver if the driver turns to look at you in their mirrors and, if they do, a nod to request "consent" from them can (not always) diffuse any/some irritation that you are making more progress than them. Remember, them looking at you does not indicate they have seen you and/or are prepared to let you pass safely.

The onus is on you to make your ride a safe one.

The UK has some of the safest roads worldwide, with a 5-6 deaths per 100,000 vehicles, even though the road system is the most congested in Europe.

The US is around 13.

And here in the Philippines, the death rate is around 135 per 100,000 vehicles (I would think the total is higher than that recorded in the Philippines though). So we win.

I did lane splitting while following a friend out in California quite a few years ago and was quite surprised at how well it worked and how cooperative the other traffic was, it’s also very much encouraged up in Canada road construction, there is usually a flag person there waving motorcycles to the front of the line.

I do it less in Europe. Some countries allow it but some don’t. I can never remember which. Also, I’ve hardly ever come across traffic jams in Europe, that’s the main reason I love riding there so much
