Greetings from East Pennsylvania.
Presently ride a custom built 87 FLSTC Harley Heritage Classic with hard bags. Rides great, looks beautiful and does well for my 5 day trips, but I'm planning to ride cross country with camping and exploring the "other roads" so it's time to adapt for the adventure and I've been wanting to do so for a while.

I've done a lot of distant cross country land navigation, camping and outdoor activities and want to do it across the country for over a month next year. I' plan to sell the Harley to find a used 2014 / 15 Super Tenere ES (hopefully loaded with gear).
I've been reading and comparing gear, equipment, etc from this site ... to include routes others have traveled. Figure it is time to join the forum.
After my August week long cycle trip, I'm planning to find the right buy in the fall / winter so I'll be reading and asking questions.
thank you

Welcome from Kansas. That's what I did. Bought a loaded used ES model. Remember all your buying is the bike. Everything they added to it is basically free. I think it's the best way to get what you want.

Had a beautiful Road King Classic before the ST but after half a year of owning both it was pretty clear the HD was only gathering dust in the garage, so I sold it. Sometimes I regret it because she was definitely by far the prettier machine, but I was in the same camp as you: Wanted to go cross country, explore unpaved roads, and camp of the bike. And the ST is perfect for all of that.

I also have a softail, 1990 version. I really enjoy it, but it's relegated to sunny sunday rides these days. It's got 280,000 miles on it, so it's just too old for long trips. But I'll never sell it.

I stumbled across a loaded 2012 S10 with 12k miles and loaded with everything I could want a couple years ago for $4k. Nobody wants the 1st gen, so they are extremely good values. The only thing I miss is cruise control, and a throttle lock works well enough... not worth the cost just for cc.

And at that price, no need to sell the softail.

And yes, the S10 is excellent for long days in the saddle no matter what the DoT or mother nature throws your way. So far I've been everywhere from Fla to Co, as far north as Ohio, and as far south as Arizona. It has never given me a single problem.

Hello and Welcome , Also from eastern Penna. Love my Road King and love my Tenere. Must admit the Road King has ate up every road I have thrown at it all across the country and I plan on keeping it. My Tenere on the other hand will be taking me to Alaska in a few weeks and it will be a totally different ride. I won't worry about gravel , mud and muck , I won't worry about it getting filthy and wet , And I won't worry about paint chips and the chrome getting dull.... As a matter of fact , I won't worry about a damn thing ! Enjoy your Tenere !IMG_0520.JPG11879292_10206019535060640_1844165083660990106_o.jpg

I feel the same. With the Venture if I plan to ride with people or stop at a bike night it has to be clean and always worry about the paint.

Ténéré if I can see through the bugs on the windshield it is ready to ride anywhere on the continent.
